5.0 out of 5 stars How'd he get missed? January 19, 2006
By Big Dan
Format:Audio CD
I'd read a little history about Mr. Nichols a few years ago; and it is a sad one, to say the least, but had never heard any of his music. I recently purchased this cd, and all I can say is, I don't get HOW he was overlooked! Soon as I began listening, I got him. At times, I hear similarities to Ahmad Jamal; other times It's kind of a toss between Monk and Bill Evans. Nichols definitely had it, though; his own sound. You just have to listen to it. I'll definitely be getting the box set soon as I can.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nichols is a "Mood Poet" January 20, 2008
Format:Audio CD
I am not the most eloquent reviewer. In fact, I didn't want to write a review for this album because I was afraid I won't do it justice.

All I can say is that Herbie Nichols is a "Mood Poet."

We've all heard about "tone poems." Herbie Nichols creates these "Mood poems" using the keys on the piano to paint these strange and unique "moods" and "atmospheres." I've never heard anything else like it.

Included in the CD is a short essay written by Nichols himself that offers some insight into his composotional style. It shouldn't coem as a surprise that Nichols considered himself a poet as much as a musician. Despite all the tragic circumstances of his life (which I won't go into here) and the neglect he suffered, I got the sense that he was an optimistic man who used poetry and music to contribute more beauty to the world.

The world always needs more beauty, and Nichols the "Mood poet" showed us a very unique kind of beauty.

5.0 out of 5 stars "ANOTHER LATE,GREAT JAZZ PIANIST!!!" October 12, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
IN THE EARLY 60'S WHEN I WOULD VISIT A FRIEND OF MINE,I WOULD ASK IF HE WOULD PLAY 'THAT
'HOUSE PARTY' SONG OR THAT 'SPINNING'TUNE FROM NICHOLS ALBUM. FINALLY, I OWN ONE OF HIS CD'S.
THESE RECORDINGS WERE RECORDED WHEN HE WAS IN HIS MID-30'S. HE DIED IN 1963 ABOUT 8 YEARS
LATER. IF YOU LIKE RICHARD TWARDZIK,HASAAN,ELMO HOPE,YOU'LL BE PLEASED WITH THESE 35 TRACKS.
(OVER 2 HOURS.) LOTS OF ORIGINAL COMPOSITIONS. LOT'S OF MINOR THEMES & DIMINISH CHORDS +
LOWER REGISTER BEING WORKED OVER WITH HIS LEFT HAND. GROUPS OF THE MIDDLE&UPPER NOTES JUMPING UP HERE AND
THERE ALL RELATED TO THE THEME. IT'S SO MUCH FUN LISTENING TO THIS TRUE ORIGINAL ARTIST.
I HAVE A HUGE JAZZ PIANO COLLECTION. THIS BELONGS WITH THE GREAT PIANO RECORDINGS I ALREADY
HAVE. BESIDES HIS ORIGINAL TUNES,HE PLAYS STANDARDS WITH A MORE TAME STYLE. BUT,NOT THAT
TAME! HE USES THICK 2 HANDED CHORDS IN PLAYING SOME OF THE TUNES. SOME ARE IN THE MIDDLE
AND SOME ARE CLOSER TO THE LOWER REGISTER. "HOUSE PARTY STARTING" MY FAVORITE. I USUALLY
PLAY IT TWICE OR MORE. BUT ,EVERY TRACK IS A GEM!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Music by a True Jazz Piano Master October 3, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I only recently discovered Herbie Nichols when I heard one of his Blue Note recordings on the radio. I was stunned by his originality. At first, I thought he sounded a lot like Thelonious Monk, but that was only a superficial assessment, I think. Upon closer listening to these excellent 1955-1957 recordings on the Blue Note and Bethlehem labels (and three bonus tracks from 1952), I've now concluded that he developed separately from Monk and was influenced at least as much by the music of classical composers like Bartok and Stravinsky. Herbie had a sound that was uniquely his own, and what a sound it is! I wholeheartedly recommend this multi-label set to those who enjoy great jazz piano trios. You don't get the unreleased and alternate Blue Note tracks that you would get on the "Complete Blue Note Recordings," but here you get the excellent Bethlehem LP "Love, Gloom, Cash, Love," and this set is easier on the wallet. This set contains four complete LPs on two CDs in excellent packaging and with good liner notes, although there are a number of annoying typos.

The music here is worth five stars for sure, but I've taken away one star because track 17 on disc 2 ("Nichols and Dimes") wouldn't play or rip on two of my Windows computers (a desktop and a laptop), and it also wouldn't play on one of my CD players. I returned the first copy I received to the Marketplace seller as defective and bought another copy, only to discover that the second copy has the exact same problem. Thank goodness, that track finally ripped correctly on a third computer with a different kind of optical drive, and it plays on my main Sony console CD player just fine. I don't blame the Marketplace seller at all for the hassle. There's apparently something odd about how this disc was manufactured.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting Nichols March 26, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The Complete Studio Master Takes by Nichols is a very interesting double Cd. Nichols's style is quite unique, with monkian echoes but keeping its own bebop. It does not sound as anybody else for sure. It is the kind of jazz that requires your full attention in order to be deeply appreciated. Nichols did not have the chance to record much under his name, and since the Blue Note complete edition is out of print, this is the best purchase available in the market (it is the same material excluding the alternate takes). The sound is good and the playing impressive, but I don't rate it higher because it is kind of repetitive, especially for a trio. It was a very welcome arrival into my jazz collection and if you are looking for something different, Mr.Nichols is a good alternative indeed. Sadly he did not live long because there is so much talent and originality in his music.
