Most Helpful Customer Reviews

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Mike Tarrani HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on August 26, 2013
Format: Audio CD
The line-up on this album introduces Paul Horn as Buddy Collette's replacement and guitarist John Pisano as Jim Hall's replacement from the original line-up. Fred Katz on cello and Carson Smith on bass, along with Chico, continue in this incarnation.

As you listen to the sound samples - especially if you are familiar with the earlier line-up with Collette on multiple instruments - you will hear that Horn is every bit Collette's equal and Pisano is a solid guitarist. You will also hear that the ensemble has solidified and settled into their unique approach to music despite the replacement of two key original members.

Horn's array of instruments is impressive. On this album he plays piccolo, flute, clarinet and alto sax. He adds an ethereal quality to most tracks, and is certainly in tune [no pun intended] with Chico's musical vision.

Most of these tracks were recorded at the Forum Theater in Los Angeles (as a studio session) on October 21 and 24, 1956. Most of the remaining tracks were recorded for an album titled Sweet Smell of Success, which was the sound track for a movie of the same name.

If you are a Chico Hamilton fan this album is significant because it contains the earliest recordings of the second Quintet. It is a clear marker of the success of Hamilton's vision and sets the stage for the next incarnation of the Quintet that would feature Eric Dolphy as Horn's replacement and Nate Gershman as Katz' replacement. This is a short-lived line-up, but a significant one that consolidated the foundation of the initial line-up. The music is excellent and the evolution of Hamilton's approach to it is fascinating.
