Editorial Reviews

Bill Withers: The Complete Sussex and Columbia Albums celebrates the timeless artistry of an American master. The set includes the nine albums that Bill released between 1971 through 1985. The albums have been reproduced in their original jackets and have been newly mastered from the original analog tapes by Grammy Award-winning engineer Mark Wilder. Bill Withers is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the recipient of ASCAP's 2006 Rhythm & Soul Heritage Award. His warm, rich and truthful voice speaks to real people, and real life, and he will tell you that it's more important to be real than to be rich.
He was 30 years old when he came out of the U.S. Navy in 1971. He made a living installing toilets in commercial jetliners, and then he decided to give music a try. His first two albums Just as I Am and Still Bill - featured "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Lean on Me." The two singles sold more than a million copies each, and by the time he played Carnegie Hall in 1973, Bill Withers was acknowledged as a great American troubadour. Four decades later, his music still resonates with originality and universality.

1. Just as I Am (Sussex, 1971)
2. Still Bill (Sussex, 1972)
3. Bill Withers Live at Carnegie Hall(Sussex, 1973)
4. +' Justments (Sussex, 1974)
5. Making Music (Columbia, 1975)
6. Naked & Warm (Columbia, 1976)
7. Menagerie (Columbia, 1977)
8. 'Bout Love (Columbia, 1978)
9. Watching You Watching Me (Columbia, 1985)

From someone who buys a lot of music, this is one of the richest purchases you can make.

The live double “Carnegie Hall” like “Donny Hathaway Live” from 1972 has garnished a legendary reputation amongst soul aficionados.

I'm hoping that Sony Europe's upcoming 15 CD box on Taj Mahal - including two rare CDs - does as good a job as this set.

If you are struggling about buying the new Bill Withers box set released by Sony Europe having invested in re-issues of some of the CDs included in the set that are available elswhere on Columbia/Columbia Legacy, Reel Music, Raven and BBR - don't hesitate - especially with some sources selling it for around $23 (less than $3 a CD) on the Amazon site. The box brings remastered versions of "Watching You Watching Me" and "'Bout Love" on CD for the first time. The audio on the set is uniformly superb - although the 24 bit remasters by Bill Lacey on Reel Music/P & C of "Naked and Warm," and "Making Music" may have a very slight sonic edge - and the cardboard sleeve reproductions - including the gatefold on "Live" and the fold out of "Still Bill" which are nice - are made such that the sleeve can bend slightly such that most of the CDs can be removed without touching the surface and inflicting irreparable damage as the effort to remove the disc results in it being flung across the room. Kudos to Sony Legacy Europe and Leo Sacks for these features and the 40-page booklet. This set has been in constant play since it arrived 3 days ago. I had forgotten just how really, really good Bill Withers's music is.
The music has always been unique - in terms of writing style, topics ("Grandma's Hands") and Bill's voice - and difficult to characterize - as he has said "Too white for black radio, too black for white radio" - when such things were far more important than they are today. Since his last Columbia album "Watching You Watching Me" in 1985, Bill Withers has been conspicuously absent from the recording scene - but his music is an almost daily staple on XM Radio's "Soul Town" - a welcome relief to a diet overly rich in Motown since the demise of "Soul Street".

From someone who buys a lot of music, this is one of the richest purchases you can make. Bill Withers is that rare breed of performer who gets to you on an even greater level personally than he does musically. This set neatly compiles all of his albums, and leaves us to treasure hunt for some very worthwhile material. However, given the low price, and the company's admission of most of these omissions in the original press release, it's hard to get too sour. Here are the main (i.e., songs with Bill on lead vocals) omissions I've identified:

1.) Better Days - theme from the 1971 film "Man and Boy". It can be found as a bonus track on the 2003 Raven twofer CD of "Just as I Am" and "Still Bill".
2.) The Gift of Giving - 1972 holiday single. It can be found on the "Smooth Grooves: Sensual Christmas" (!) compilation.
3.) Let Us Love - the studio b-side to the above track, included in a live version on the Carnegie Hall album. It appears the original version has not been released on CD or for download.
4.) It's All Over Now - 1975 duet with Bobby Womack. It can be found on the same CD as #1, as well as "The Essential Bobby Womack".
5.) Rosie - a beautiful demo recording of an otherwise-unreleased song off the 2008 reissue of "Menagerie," which also contains a single edit and instrumental track of two songs originally on that album.
6.) Just the Two of Us - The hit 1980 duet with Grover Washington, Jr. off the latter's "Winelight" album, and any Bill Withers compilation.
7.) Soul Shadows - 1980 collaboration with The Crusaders, off their "Rhapsody and Blues" album. It can also be found on Bill's 1989 "Greatest Hits" compilation.
8.) USA - 1981 solo single. Unreleased on CD or for download.
9.) In the Name of Love - 1984 duet with Ralph MacDonald.
