Extraordinarily complete coverage includes detailed, technical explanations for tackling real-life system administration issues that frequently arise in Windows and UNIX operating environments. A host of examples, diagrams, and screen shots from current versions of OpenBSD, Linux, IRIX, AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and MacOS X are provided to accelerate learning. Similarly, insightful discussions of system security tools, best practices for maintaining and improving system reliability, and tips and techniques for integrating a diverse collection of systems into a single, cohesive network are offered to save time and enhance productivity. Whether used as the foundation of a technical library, a "go-to" professional reference, or a core text for students, The Complete Systems Administrator is the ideal choice for anyone seeking a single volume that covers all core responsibilities of the highly skilled professional.

5.0 out of 5 stars Specific topics, but broad range - very useful, January 15, 2003

This book is a great book to have around to help solve some of the problems encountered day to day. I haven't found a topic that hasn't been covered in this book, and the authors hit the nail on the head when describing subjects. This is a great book for anyone who deals with multi-platform networks. I reach for it first every time I see a current or potential problem. 90% of the time I can just use this book instead of having to search through topic-specific manuals and references.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but too much linux, August 16, 2008

This review is from: The Complete Systems Administrator (Paperback)
I myself am not the biggest Microsoft fan, but the authors of this book take it to a whole new level. In discussing different server tasks they often go out of their way with little side notes and other comments to make sure we know how awful Microsoft is and how great Linux is. I think it kind of detracts from the book overall, which is pretty good. After the first few times where their comments are funny, the subsequent comments just get annoying. Another issue with their Linux-obsession is that they assume coming in that people who read this book will have a fairly good working knowledge of Linux, thus if you are a newbie in Linux, this would be a good second book, but not a good place to start, as you will be lost much of the time, or spend hours searching the Internet trying to figure out what they are talking about it.
