About the Author

Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695), best known for his Fables, composed his racy Tales in Verse over several years. Near the end of his life, he embraced religion and disowned the controversial Tales. Guido Waldman has translated Orlando Furioso and the Decameron for Oxford University Press, and won the Weidenfeld Prize for his translation of Alessandro Baricco's novel Silk. He is Editorial Director at the Harvill Press in London.
