Editorial Reviews

The Complete Them 1964-1967, a 3-disc anthology, is the most thorough collection of Van Morrison's early studio and live performances ever assembled. It includes all material recorded for the first two Them albums - The Angry Young Them (1965) and Them Again (1966)- in addition to singles, demos, live sessions, alternate takes and rarities, many of them long unavailable or previously unreleased.

All tracks have been newly remastered for this collection and the package includes a 16-page booklet featuring an insightful new commentary on Them provided by Van Morrison.

This box set goes deeper into Them's music than the 2 CD "Story of Them With Van Morrison" set. Included are singles, demos, alternate takes, live BBC, and previously unissued rare tracks. For people from later generations who may not be familiar with Them, the albums released after Morrison left are not included. The band splintered into two bands one called Them and the other the Belfast Gypsies, both which had a different sound. This set focuses on the years 1964-1967, when Them was a tough r&b/blues/rock band. The remastered sound (both mono and stereo) has cleaned up the music, which (to my ears) sounds cleaner and a bit more open without any compression that destroys the original sound. The 15 page booklet has commentary from Morrison himself--apparently this set was licensed from his Exile Productions, Ltd. company, unlike the recent solo albums reissued on the Warner's label.

Disc 1 (1964-65) has Decca singles ('64-'65), a Decca EP ('65), and the album "Them" ("Angry Young...") ('65). Disc 2 (1966-67) has the album "Them Again", Decca and Major/Minor singles ('66-'67), and two tracks from a Decca Netherlands EP. Disc 3 (1964-67, '74) has previously unreleased tracks (1-10, 12-24 (including BBC tracks, singles and alternate tracks), track 11 from (possibly) "The Long Taverner's Charity " album on Decca ('65), Parrot singles from '66 (tracks 21-22), and a track from London Records' "Backtrackdirt" (sic) album ('74). The15 page booklet includes a five page essay on the band by Van Morrison which gives us a more personal view of the band and the music, plus period photos and other ephemera and a complete track list. The discs snap into trays inside the quad-fold cardboard packaging with a slot for the booklet.

Well, got it today and typical of US releases these days, there's some major new things to love and also some major disappointments for us stereo buffs.

First thing; don't get rid of your prior 2-CD set! All of the regularly issued tracks are mono. On the plus side, that handful of weirdly rechanneled stereo with added percussion have been properly replaced with the original mono versions (hooray!). But on those alternates (see below), the sound is so amazingly brilliantly stereo, it's a heartache that the same mixing care was not used on the regular issued tracks. So, they're all mono, a bit grungy, but they sound better than I've ever heard them.)

for any fan, this is an absolutely ESSENTIAL purchase. Those stereo alternates are gonna blow you away........

Before Van Morrison became, well, VAN MORRISON, he was a member of an R&B outfit named Them. Like the giant ants that invaded Los Angeles (and which only partially inspired their name--the real inspiration was another band that had the name and it was just different enough for them to call their own), Them took the U.S. by storm (rather than crawling out of storm drains like the creatures in the 1950's movie) with their first hits "Baby Please Don't Go", "Here Comes The Night" and the best remembered hit that Morrison penned himself "Gloria".

Improving on the previous (and long out-of-print) anthology, "The Complete Them: 1964-1967" gives us ALL of the band's albums, singles and a nice sized group of rarities (most of the third disc) consisting of demos, BBC shows, alternate takes.

I must admit when I heard that Morrison gained he rights to the Them catalog, I wasn't optimistic that we would see anything beyond the two CD set from nearly 15 years ago. This set, I'm happy to say, has proved me wrong although I doubt that this cleared everything off the cupboard so-to-speak but, nevertheless, this set is exceptional.

Sony Legacy has done a superb job of putting this set together. Featuring liner notes penned by Van himself, he gives the history of the band (from his perspective) includin the constantly shifting line up and the use of studio musicians (including Alan White of Yes fame on drums and Jimmy Page on guitar for "Here Comes The Night" among other songs).

The most important thing is the mastering. Compiled by Andrew Sandoval, I was a afraid this might be compressed due to current trends. Dan Hersch does a good job of keeping the music dynamic.
