5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and well-written, full of interesting details!

THIS BOOK IS YET ANOTHER TITANIC BOOK FUSED TOGETHER BY BITS AND PIECES OF OLD AND RECYCLED INFORMATION. THE AUTHOR SEEMS TO BUILT UPON A POORLY WRITTEN BOOK CALLED, TOTAL TITANIC, BY: MARC SHAPIRO. NOT THAT THIS BOOK IS WITHOUT IT'S GOOD POINTS, BUT MANY MORE SOURCES COULD HAVE BEEN CONSULTED.

Many books have been written on the Titanic, but this one is unique. It is incredibly thorough, detailed, and well-written. I purchased it after I had devoured "Titanic: An Illustrated History", and rather than duplicating all that information, this book contains hundreds of new details and facts. Just as Mr. Spignesi says, it includes menus (though not complete for 1st and 2nd class-- instead there are samples), Molly Brown's insurance claim, a fascinating list of movie bloopers, survivor accounts, Ismay's testimony, etc. I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the Titanic-- you will not be disappointed! I had only two concerns: one, that the "lost scenes from the movie" section was mostly absent (I understand this was removed at the last minute before it went to press-- boo hiss), and two, that there is at least one possible editing error concerning the death of Emily Ryerson's son, which made me a little nervous about how thoroughly this text had been fact-checked. Nevertheless, I completely enjoyed this book and it lives up to its title. The movie bloopers section alone makes it worth reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stands above the rest, June 19, 2001
This review is from: The Complete Titanic: From the Ship's Earliest Blueprints to the Epic Film (Hardcover)
This really is a complete book about the Titanic. It includes chapters such as: 'A complete chronicle of the Titanic disaster' that lists what happened nearly every minute of the fateful night; 'mysteries of the Titanic - a century of secrets'; 'Titanic 1997' which tells about James Cameron's movie; and 'The quest of the century' which details Dr. Robert Ballards' discovery of the wreck of the Titanic. Also the book includes a complete reprinting of the 1898 novella that seems to have predicted the Titanic disaster.

This book is really great for anyone interested in the Titanic. It is fascinating, well written and detailed. One of the great things about this book is that you can read the chapters that interest you (in any order) without missing anything by skipping parts.

It was no surprise that the theatrical release of James Cameron's 1997 Christmas blockbuster spawned the publishing of many different fictional novels as historical books centering around the events of April 14th, 1912. Out of the literally hundreds of books on the subject, "The Complete Titanic" is the most informative and entertaining, from its historical content to the details surrounding the making of and release of the popular film. With pages of photographs interspersed among chapters divided into sections, the book is a highly admirable way to distribute information on a widely growing phenomenon that has taken Hollywood and its followers by storm. Not to be missed, "The Complete Titanic" is an excellent read and resource for movie and historical buffs.

While not a story of that fateful night, this book is a must have for anyone interested about the Titanic. The lists of information are great. My only quibble is I would have liked more photos! Still, a great book!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect companion - a collector's must-have, February 25, 1999

This review is from: The Complete Titanic: From the Ship's Earliest Blueprints to the Epic Film (Hardcover)
I admit I wasn't too interested in the Titanic until last summer when I finally relented and saw the film at a (budget-priced) theater. That's really all it took. I checked out all the books my library had and purchased several more regarding the making of the film itself.

After collecting several items surrounding the Titanic and the blockbuster film, I was convinced I could do no better. Then I purchased the Complete Titanic, and I was brought back once again to 1912.

It is the most comprehensive compilation of facts seen yet by myself. Yes, many will say that these things have been hammered down over and over, but I think you'll be surprised at some new things you might have missed before.

For the person just now embarking on their journey to Titanic, this is an excellent path for their fact-finding mission. Enjoy!

1.0 out of 5 stars A Shameless Hatchet Job, June 5, 2005
This review is from: The Complete Titanic: From the Ship's Earliest Blueprints to the Epic Film (Hardcover)
I was utterly appalled at Spignesi's relentless hatchet job against George Tulloch or shall I amend that to the late George Tulloch who I remembered as a soft-spoken individual who didn't have a mean or petty bone in his body. I certainly didn't recognize this flamboyant, money grubbing huckster portrayed by Spigneisi who sought only to profit off Titanic's artifacts and who only wanted to unceremoniously yank the Titanic up one piece at a time. The late George Tulloch was a good, decent man who sought to enlighten the world by bringing the Titanic to life once again through the very ordinary things Titanic's passengers and crew casually used on a daily basis. This isn't grave robbing or plundering--if it was than there would be no museums open to educate people about the ways our ancestors lived, worked and died. George sacrificed a great deal to make his dreams a reality and I think the last third of Spignesi's book was stupid and cruel beyond belief. As a Titanic researcher myself, I am also sick and tired of Bob Ballard's saint act--it's worn thin. Bob Ballard has also profited off the Titanic through books and lectures and yet gets a free pass because he has an eternal halo over his head.

Spignesi's book sounded so promising and became so very disappointing thanks to his well-orchestrated smear campaign against the late George Tulloch who, sadly, lost his battle with cancer in January, 2004.
