3.0 out of 5 stars Complete? Yes. Ground breaking? No
Chock full of information but for the frequent traveler, nothing ground breaking in it. A lot of the back chapters are geared towards niche demographic groups (seniors, gay/lesbian, etc.) and so you'll just flip through a lot of it. He lists a ton of different links for useful websites throughout the book but it would be helpful if they were compiled as an appendix in...

As the CEO of a large Travel Insurance company and concierge companies we take care of 6,000,000 travelers each year. As such we are involved in helping people all over the world with medical and emergency travel problems as well as just general concierge questions. This book is perhaps the most insightful travel publication published. It is factual and practical This man travels more than his readers ever will. He knows travel, knows the pitfalls and anticipates the moves he needs to orchestrate his travel. We will use it as a reference for our Emergency Travel Representatives and our Concierge staff.

The title is appropriate as it is truly a bible for travelers. If more people read it and use it as a reference both before and during their trip, they would find their travels to be uninterrupted by travel problems A modest investment for people who want to travel trouble free. I would recommend this book for all travelers, both leisure and business.

After about 10 minutes, this book helped me get a better deal on airfare to Paris.
I'm giving to several friends who travel a great deal for work, but are enjoying it less.
There are enough suggestions here to keep me happier traveling for the next 10 years.

This book is just plain fun to read, along with, of course, providing lots & lots of what seems to be current information about every aspect of traveling. The author uses anecdotes to illustrate points, which makes it good even for armchair travelers. At 601 pages not counting the index, there is a huge amount of content here. He covers travel contingencys, options, things I'd never thought of, & provides address's both email & regular mail. His writing style is enjoyable & easy to understand. I highly recommend this book even if you only travel once a year, or just dream of it.

He lists a ton of different links for useful websites throughout the book but it would be helpful if they were compiled as an appendix in the back of the book.

If you're an inexperienced traveler who is going to be doing a lot more travel in the future, this is a good book for you. For the rest, may be overkill/underkill.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Bore To Read And Not As Much Useful Info As I Had Hoped For, January 16, 2008

This isn't really so much a book that you would want to read in its entirety as a collection of data and opinions to scan through. Sections 1-2 are devoted to topics such as airports, frequent filer miles and baggage policies. A novice traveller might find something helpful here. But most travellers will find very little that they don't already know.

Sections 3-5 are focused on various forms of "speciality travel" such as pet travel, biking and culinary travel. If you a have a particular interest in one of the forms of "speciality travel" covered than this might be of interest. But once again the info presented here seemed pretty basic and the sort of the stuff that could be easily found on the internet.

In fact, a few web sites mentioned was the only aspect of the book that I found useful at all. Perhaps most of the credit here should go to Sarika Chawla who Greenberg says is his information researcher. On the other hand Greenberg has a rather grumpy style of writing and a tendency to go off on rants which I found unpleasant. I didn't enjoy reading it and there just wasn't enough useful information to make this worthy of of a recommendation.

I've been a travel agent for quite a while and this book was written up in our local newspaper travel section as recommended. I wasn't impressed with most of the information included. It was like a reprint of every other travel book out there with nothing that was a revelation. If you use common sense and treat people with dignity, you'll get more from the people that work at hotels, airlines, etc. If you're looking to really save money on rental cars, try Hotwire. For hotels you can bid on them at Priceline and Hotwire and get a better deal than even we agents can usually get. I'd pass on this and just read internet articles instead. You'll save your cash to at least be able to buy one Coke at the airport.

5.0 out of 5 stars You NEED this book!, January 17, 2008
This review is from: The Complete Travel Detective Bible: The Consummate Insider Tells You What You Need to Know in an Increasingly Complex World! (Paperback)
I've been traveling for business and pleasure for 37 years, up to two weeks and half a dozen different cities per month. Most importantly, my travels have been on my dime, because I'm self-employed, and I've sought every time- and money-saving ploy I could come up with. But I learned a frightening amount of new information from this book.

There is a good mixture of tips for buying tickets, getting the most from your hotel stays, and other procedural topics, as well as good information oriented towards specific destinations. This book is excellent for browsing, or for reading from cover-to-cover.

If you think you know everything there is to know about travel: you don't. Peter Greenberg does, however, and you should take advantage of his expertise.

These two books have been around a while - I originally saw Travel Detective in an earlier edition (pre 9/11) but they have been updated to the current editions. As far as I can tell, the ideas and tips are comprehensive. Easy to read format and entertaining, even if you don't plan to travel anytime soon. Would recommend!

This was supposed to be or promoted by you as an update to his previous book. Only one page had to do with his previous book. I wanted a real update because i loaned out the other older one. Very disappointed. I suppose it would have been good for those wanting this information

This very well-written and informative book has real useful information by a travel tramp who knows the real ins and outs of travel with very informative and helpful ideas you would never think of to save your trip, your health and your wallet. East to read and in chapters, so you can read areas that interest you most first. The whole book is a great read and I learned many things I would have never known even though I do travel on a regular basis internationally. No details have been left out and travelers can plan their trips much better after reading this book. I looked at other books in the bookstore and this one stands out. Real helpful information explicitly told and you won't want to put this book down. A+
Kevin
