Book Description

May 15, 2000
Poetry. In Martin Corless-Smith's poems there are many voices, heard and misheard in fragments fused in startling array. They are dialect poems, but the dialect undergoes constant shift, a wealth of vernacular only loosely bound to time and place: grammar twists and bends as echoes are sounded of an older written language, lively ghosts of speech. Corless-Smith embraces the themes and devices of the pastoral, with and without irony, to create the rituals of Worcestershire Mass and the intermittent masque of The Garden. These poems seem always to demand performance, but it is a performance they also, for the sheer pleasure of unruliness, resist.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Original...His...evocation of older poetries transcends expectations about what we are obliged to term linguistically innovative poetry. -- Jacket Magazine

There's...a sense of antiquarian exploration...but also a poetic exploration of almost Olsonian breadth. Stimulating stuff, all round. -- Shearsman Magazine

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than Of Piscator, December 23, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Travels (Paperback)
I was a sucker for the strange, incantatory, lush soundplay in Of Piscator and I think Complete Travels is even better. Corless-Smith can be a sort of Sea and Cake of millennial poetry--you can let the poems wash over you in a deep fascinating pastoral pleasance. Or you can toughly encounter them--they're lovely, but difficult, and they reward close reading. Check out "The Garden" for an astounding meditation on the way humans inhabit and simultaneously build their world. The line between art and reality shimmers and dissolves as I read.
