2008 release. Ty Karim was a stunning looking, tall and elegant LA Soul singer with a raw emotive vocal delivery. She recorded from the mid '60s to early '80s, mainly under the auspices of her second husband Kent "Boo-Ga-Loo" Harris.Her recordings were mainly original dancefloor-inspired numbers, very dynamic and great vehicles for her husky voice. The '60s tracks are Northern Soul at its best. The crossover funk of 'Wear Your Natural' presaged the '70s Soul sound that Ty also mastered and she worked through that decade with great acclaim for 'Lightin' Up' and then into the '80s when her 12" collaboration with George Griffin 'Keep On Doin' Whatcha Doin'' gained her new overseas fans. Kent Harris has given us complete access to all his master tapes and we have found some great alternative takes on some of Ty's songs, including a great blues version of 'Lighten Up Baby'. The tape clarity is particularly good too, given the dubious sound quality of the previous bootlegs. 20 tracks. Kent.

A whole lotta '60s Soul from Ty Karim and a great Producer, Kent Harris.
The, shall we say, "signature" song of the collection is "Lighten Up Baby", pressed in four variations, sassy and swingin' at the same time.
We have another late sixties opus, "All At Once" here in two variations: the "alternate vocal" is much rougher but makes the cut just as strong - octave-leaping wails drop the cherry right on top of the tasty entry.
Something especially interesting for Little Richard fans in that "Only A Fool" is a new vocal and melody over a Wally Long arrangement of the Platters' "Only You", which Richard committed to disc in '64. There's another track called "I Ain't Lying" which sounds to this Reviewer as the same treatment applied to another Richard 1964 cover, "Memories Are Made Of This".
Not necessary to run for the Chart Books - Ty has triumphed without those "numbers". Some real, raw Soul on the distaff side, with sounds that will not dissuade collectors of Brunswick and King records.
