1.0 out of 5 stars I can't open this book! September 8, 2012

I've twice tried to download this book, once when I was given it as a gift and again by ordering it direct. Each time my Kindle freezes up and has to be restarted over & over again. Everything else is available, but not this volume. I can only assume my Kindle has a built-in censor and disapproves of Ulysses!

4.0 out of 5 stars review of James Joyce Set 1 June 1, 2012
Verified Purchase
This e-book version of Set 1, Complete Works of James Joyce, includes Ulysses, Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Chamber Music. Extraordinary value for money! The writing is superb: original, sensually rich, and funny. A wordsmith at work.

The e-book version is an interesting reading experience. Must confess, I've never managed to finish Ulysses in print, but somehow the e-version, being presented in small portions, is eminently readable.

On the other hand, I miss the physical presence of a book as artefact. Also I regret that there are sometimes typos, probably due to scanning, that detract from one's reading pleasure, in e-books in general.

However, I recommend this collection whole-heartedly.

These James Joyce books are presented in some of the best versions released, including the original Ulysses which was published in Paris, complete with typographical and grammer errors. Unless you fight epic books because of their character and theme complexity you will fall in love with Joyce as you get into his writing style and see his characters live out the issues that have made Joyce's writings epic and universally popular through the ages. These are not "quick reads", but will lead the reader to appreciate the beauty of the English language and the skill of world-class authors, now revered for their unique talents in presenting beautiful stories for us to read and enjoy. If you haven't read Joyce you should start with this Kindle elecctic version. The price is right and Joyce's books are a real treat for those who love English prose and beautiful stories. You may regret not reading James Joyce if you are stuck with modern novels.
