Everything You Need to Know About The Kindle,
I received a Kindle 1 as a birthday gift back in November and followed the simple Amazon directions to download books and then read them. This worked. However, when I went to the Amazon website and read conversations with people that were doing more with the Kindle than I could understand, I purchased Windwalker's book. His ad offered information about "more" ways to use this revolutionary toy and I wanted more. His first book opened the door to understanding how this not just a reader, but a mini computer capable of bringing a huge world of books and information to my fingertips. Now my Kindle experience was great.
By the time Kindle 2 came out, I was way hooked on this product, bought it and of course then immediately read his Kindle 2 information. Although I really enjoyed the struggle related to Kindle 1 (I have been working with computers since the early 80's) - his Kindle 2 book puts readers just a tiny click away from anywhere they want to go and any books they want to read on this marvelous machine. Now the experience was terrific. Windwalker has made it easy to enjoy all the benefits of the Kindle 1 and 2. His advice and ideas are very valuable and the links are perfect. By the way, I'm a 73 year old woman and I find everything about this technology fantastic.

Pass on this "Beta version",
By Personally, I think it's lame to release a "Beta version" of a book anyway. Books shouldn't become like software. That's the slippery slope we get into with eBooks. It should either be finished and ready for release or not. Period. Also, save your money and read the well-written manual that comes installed on your Kindle. There are lots of tips and tricks already in there.

Stephen Windwalker is my "go-to" guy,

I ordered The Complete User's Guide to the Amazing Amazon Kindle II the same day I found out that my husband had ordered my Kindle. I had already relied on Stephen's advice for my original Kindle, and knew he would have excellent tips and explanations for the new version.
His included links turned out to be a double bonus. I refer to the book often, and really feel that it has enhanced my usage of the Kindle. This book really is a must have for any Kindle owner who wants to get the most of their ereader!

What You Already Know in Repetitive Prose,
By CC "Chris" (US) - See all my reviews The writing is generally more casual and entertaining than a typical user manual, but it's also poorly structured and puzzlingly repetitive at times. For example, the author explains how the Kindle 2 has two built-in speakers but also can be used with headphones in four different sections of the book. Do those count as 4 of the 500 alleged "tips and tricks"? Many other features of the Kindle are described several times in the book. This actually confused a new Kindle user like myself; at first I assumed I was accidentally hitting some button that caused me to re-read sections of the book. This was not a pleasant book to read for that reason, but there will be some value for some users. The book contains a long list of web links (in desperate need of editing) that includes few helpful pointers to resources for free (public domain) e-books. This information will be helpful for many new e-book readers like myself, but it's also probably nothing that I could not have learned with a few web searches such as "free ebooks"

1.99 rip off,
By Crickett "Crickett" (Texas) - See all my reviews
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Even at $1.99 it is a rip off. Nothing but links and some of them don't even work.
It says you can e-mail him for a list of the links which can be used from your computer. Don't waste your time asking for this; I have e-mailed 4 times and NEVER GOT A REPLY!!!! Save your money; wish I had!!

Excellent even for techno-savvy folks,
By CivWar64 (Bob) (NY, USA) - See all my reviews
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I've worked in the computer industry for over 30 years, and usually have no problems figuring out how to use technology related products, and so I wasn't sure if I would need Stephen's guide. I was pleasantly surprised not only at the quality of writing, but also in the detailed lists of links and features of the Kindle 2 that I could not find documented elsewhere. Just the tips on the best ways for setting up the Kindle browser and how move over photos was worth it. So, even if you are good with technology related products, you'll save time with Stephen's guide.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is mostly regurgitated info from other sources. It also doesn't square very well with the title - the author has a lot of fluff about Kindle history, and other information that could hardly be called "Tips, Tricks & Links..." for the Kindle.
It's hard to argue with a buck for this, but on the other hand, lots of your time will be spent wading through the excess. It's made me wary of what sort of other things will masquerade as content on the Kindle. Here's a feature I should have used - Sample.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have had this guide since I got my original Kindle2 in April 2009. It was my very first Kindle purchase, since I knew that I needed some good advice on how to get the most of my new purchase (and the Amazon manual was very weak).
Frankly, I refer to it frequently for tips and suggestions on how to do various functions on my Kindle. I use it to help me download different material from the web onto my device. And, it showed me how to play some games like Gomoku(which I didn't even know were there). For you new Kindle owners out there, I really think this is the best guide for you. Mr. Windwalker has a great Kindle blog in which he continually demonstrates just how much he understand this terrific device and how to make it sing. That is all right here in this book. I read often on the Amazon forums questions on how to do various things on your Kindle. Don't bother- they are all right here. And, very easy to follow with step by step instructions. This is the guide to have. You'll end up keeping it on the first page of your home screen. That's how often it will help.

Does not apply to latest (3G) version of Kindle,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book discusses the differences between the first and second versions of the Kindle reader. There are significant differences in the hardware configuration between
version 2 and the present 3G version of the machine and the firmware ( 3.01 and above) which make the book less attractive to buyers of newer machines. |
