The first part of the book focuses on the general issues of designing sites and the methodology behind upgrading them. Author Lisa Schmeiser then shows how to code HTML like the pros and set up server file structures in a well-organized manner. She discusses how to tune your Web server and design pages with usability in mind, and then presents the first of four complete case studies.
Next, Schmeiser leads you to dynamic site design with discussions of the Document Object Model, Dynamic HTML, forms, and multimedia. This jam-packed third section includes two more case studies. The last portion of the book focuses on cutting-edge design techniques, XML, extranets, version control, and more. Whether you're just starting out in the field of Web development or want to move your knowledge to the next level, this weighty guide is invaluable. --Stephen W. Plain

Thorough, Informative,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Website Upgrade & Maintenance Guide (Mass Market Paperback)
The Complete Website Upgrade & Maintenance Design Guide isn't for people who take Web design lightly. It's a thorough and comprehensive resource that rewards readers who pay attention throughout the course of reading the volumnious workbook. Particularly strong are the case studies, which walk you through the different stages of a site. The chapters are easy to read, in particular those on site and backend planning. The book's sidebars explain _why_ standards get set and how things work technically -- very informative and very involved. The book's size may be intimidating to some, particularly novices. But it comes across as a book that will help answer different questions at different stages of development. And it lays things out so plainly that, unless you're completely dense, the book will point you in the right direction. A must read for anyone who wants to improve their Web design skills.

a book for frequent reference,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Website Upgrade & Maintenance Guide (Mass Market Paperback)
I was intimidated by the size of the book at first, but the author's easy reading tone and information make me comfortable. As a novice webmaster, the sections on setting up a backend and testing your site before launch were most useful. I will continue to use this book as a reference as I learn more.

Tons of Paper not worth the ink on the First Page,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Website Upgrade & Maintenance Guide (Mass Market Paperback)
A Large volume of incomplete data that no one else would obviously co-author as it is obviously missing so much real world data and not providing anything workable. I have asked the publisher to provide updates on the web to fix the holes(sieve) in this very flawed work for those of us who believed the good name of Sybex needed redemption after this book. Not one Case Study would work when placed on a host server. Investing many hours to find that out is terrible at best. Sorry for such a bad review but I wanted others to know what they are getting before buying this one and investing precious time, as I have.
