Thorough, Informative,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Website Upgrade & Maintenance Guide (Mass Market Paperback)
The Complete Website Upgrade & Maintenance Design Guide isn't for people who take Web design lightly. It's a thorough and comprehensive resource that rewards readers who pay attention throughout the course of reading the volumnious workbook. Particularly strong are the case studies, which walk you through the different stages of a site. The chapters are easy to read, in particular those on site and backend planning. The book's sidebars explain _why_ standards get set and how things work technically -- very informative and very involved. The book's size may be intimidating to some, particularly novices. But it comes across as a book that will help answer different questions at different stages of development. And it lays things out so plainly that, unless you're completely dense, the book will point you in the right direction. A must read for anyone who wants to improve their Web design skills.

a book for frequent reference,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Website Upgrade & Maintenance Guide (Mass Market Paperback)
I was intimidated by the size of the book at first, but the author's easy reading tone and information make me comfortable. As a novice webmaster, the sections on setting up a backend and testing your site before launch were most useful. I will continue to use this book as a reference as I learn more.

Tons of Paper not worth the ink on the First Page,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Website Upgrade & Maintenance Guide (Mass Market Paperback)
A Large volume of incomplete data that no one else would obviously co-author as it is obviously missing so much real world data and not providing anything workable. I have asked the publisher to provide updates on the web to fix the holes(sieve) in this very flawed work for those of us who believed the good name of Sybex needed redemption after this book. Not one Case Study would work when placed on a host server. Investing many hours to find that out is terrible at best. Sorry for such a bad review but I wanted others to know what they are getting before buying this one and investing precious time, as I have.

This book got me into web design!,

I love this book and the reason I am witting this review is because I am on Amazon looking for a more recent edition then the one I own.I got this book before I knew anything about web design. I bought it mostly because it was a massive tome and on sale!. It was a great introduction to the various website technologies of the time but more important it taught me to pay attention and to plan ahead when designing websites and thereby save myself many hours and days of frustration when trying to update a site. This simple lesson is priceless: plan ahead! Although much of the information may be out of date I would still suggest suggest buying this book, if you are a beginner, as it will help you start off on a path of web design that emphasizes broad strategic foresight in design and maintenance. I wish there was a 2006 edition. Oh how sad the fate of an unappreciated masterpiece!

Excellent for DOM web developers,
By bc from new york (New York City) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Complete Website Upgrade & Maintenance Guide (Mass Market Paperback)
Ok, I read the reviews of the people above me and I disagree with some of the reviews. This is a very good book to point out the features of DOM (Document Object Model) and it has a very good segue into DHTML.Ok, some of the information on web site structure and the role that HTML plays is a little redundent, but I think people should buy this if they want to get good at some of the higher level web development protocols and languages like Javascript, DHTML, and XML. I think this book will really soften the blow that can hit from graduating from HTML. Keep in mind that for people who use Dreamweaver and Frontpage, those people will never get good at web design because those programs do it all for the user and the one disadvantage that Frontpage and Dreamweaver have on web designers is that they really do not allow a web developer to make a really good automated web site or an interactive web site. This book does give you the hows and whys of learning these higher level languages and makes all of them really easy to learn. I bought this book and I am not disappointed.

A Tale of Some Good and Mostly Old Hat,
By A Customer

I think this book was informative, but most of the material is old hat. However, Appendix B was one redeeming factor ("User Interface Checklist").

snoooozzz,

This review is from: The Complete Website Upgrade & Maintenance Guide (Mass Market Paperback)
I bought this book for a class in introduction to website development. I honestly have to say I couldnt get past the first three chapters, so that is what I will comment on. I had to read this at Starbucks so I was close to a source of caffiene. Everything I read had to do with understanding the project of building a website or taking over an existing one...the book really needs to be retitled something along the lines of...How to determine whether or not your staff is worth keeping. Complete waste of time and money...Just glad I got it at price club for 22.95.

A complete waste of time and money.,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Website Upgrade & Maintenance Guide (Mass Market Paperback)
I am not sure what the author was thinking (or even better what the publisher was thinking) when they wrote this "book." A basic rehash of the basics with no real value adds. I didn't get even one unique insight by reading this book. The author uses a borish writing style and has very little applied experience/wisdom to share. Save your time and money and go elsewhere!

Very Pathetic,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Website Upgrade & Maintenance Guide (Mass Market Paperback)
I got this book in the mail from the Small Computer Book Club (I forgot to send back the card saying "Don't Send") and thought I'd check out the reviews at Amazon.com. I was uncertain as to whether or not I'd keep the book, since the reviews seemed mixed. I decided to visit the author's personal web site to see if she knew of what she spoke and was very disappointed. If you are thinking of buying this book, go to the author's website and you'll change your mind.
