Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The first ten years of my professional life were spent as a consultant in a range of companies. I covered a lot of ground, from detailed research on propagation and high data rate technologies, through regulation, large users and cellular operators. As time went on I found that I was increasingly in demand to solve problems that spanned multiple areas of the industry, for example cellular operators who wanted to attract railroads onto their networks, or regulators who were looking at moving spectrum from broadcasting to cellular. Very few individuals seemed to have the background to tackle such diverse areas - most rapidly becoming specialists in one particular area - and yet convergence is bringing all these different worlds together. Hence the idea of the "complete wireless professional" - one well versed in all aspects of wireless communications from technology to management, from cellular to satellite, from business cases to regulatory decisions.

Above all, the Complete Wireless Professional needs to understand the world around him and apply this knowledge to engineering and management issues. This book describes the world of mobile radio. The first part include the basics of mobile radio, the design of cellular and private radio systems and the issues concerned with interworking with the fixed network. The second part looks at being a mobile radio operator and discusses the design of mobile radio networks, the operation of these networks, and the needs of large user groups. The third part looks at the regulatory and government decisions which have an impact on mobile radio. The final part focuses on becoming a better engineer, and the way to become a Complete Wireless Professional through professional vehicles and career structure.

If you work within the cellular industry as a manager or an engineer, or in a related discipline and want to broaden your horizons and get a better understanding of the world around you, this is the book for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fair Content, but NOT for the US Wireless Market, May 20, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Wireless Communications Professional: A Guide for Engineers and Managers (Artech House Mobile Communications Library) (Hardcover)
Unfortunately, the author does not concentrate on CDMA and iDEN--the two dominant standards in the US--and focuses on the GSM market. Since he is a British author, the obvious slant is understandable.

Noentheless, the chapters on the fundamentals of wireless network accounting and the history of wireless are good. The more technical chapters are comprehensive (except for the concentration on the GSM standard) but he needs more techical drawings and diagrams.

This is an outstanding book. The explanations and level of detail are ideally suited as the title suggests. Clearly the author has spent considerable time and effort researching the subject and his knowledge is presented in a user friendly manor. Recommended reading for anyone considering entering the field of Mobile Telecommunications.
