From Library Journal
ea. vol: ed. by Philip L. Barbour. illus. maps. LC 81-10364. ISBN 0-8078-1525-X. $150. autobiog/hist This excellent edition supplants Edward Arber's Captain John Smith . . . Works, 1608-1631 (1884). All of Smith's works are here, among them Proceedings of the English Colony of Virginia (1612), Generall Historie of Virginia (1624), and The True Adventures and Observations of Captain John Smith (1630). Barbour, noted for The Three Worlds of Captain John Smith (1964), has the ability to communicate with history buffs as well as scholars. Smith was an adventurous, public-spirited individual, deeply involved in the colonization of Virginia and New England. Although the primary texts do not reveal a very engaging author, the editor's commentaries and Alison M. Quinn's index will draw the amateur to these important volumes. An obvious purchase for strong collections in American history; medium-sized public and undergraduate libraries should consider as well. Sally Linden, Wellesley Coll. Lib., Mass.
