Double Entendre Blues!,

This review is from: Complete Works In Chronological Order, Vol. 1, 1929-1936 (Audio CD)
Lil Johnson was a lively singer who specialised in slightly risque blues / hokum songs delivered with great verve. The first track, from 1929, features a rare accompaniment by the great Montana Taylor, followed by four tracks with the obscure but dynamic Chicago pianist Charles Avery, again from 1929. After a six year gap, Lil Johnson returned to the recording studio, and from her second session onwards, hit up a striking partnership with the ragtime influenced pianist "Black Bob", who provided ebullient support to Johnson's increasingly suggestive lyrics. Tracks such as "Press My Button, Ring My Bell" and "Get 'Em From the Peanut Man" (also known as "Hot Nuts") are classics of their kind. Anyone looking for the profundity of Bessie Smith or Ma Rainey should give this CD a pass. For other blues enthusiasts, this is a splendidly entertaining disc. Recommended.
