OK, but don't get for college courses,

This review is from: The Complete Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson & Henry David Thoreau (The Complete Works of Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson) (Kindle Edition)
As mentioned, this IS NOT a complete collection. While there are very many important works in here, it doesn't have everything. If you are taking a college class, you might want to spend the extra few bucks for true complete editions. Also, the essay titled "Nature" in this edition is NOT the essay from "Nature; Addresses and Lectures." That said, I don't necessarily feel like the $1.99 was a waste, but I do feel like I was a little hoodwinked by the title. This is not the first purported "Complete" works collection I've bought for my Kindle that turned out to be incomplete.

VERY Misleadingly Titled,

This Kindle title keeps coming up when I do Amazon searches, and I keep being tempted to purchase it because I would love to have on my Kindle what it purports to contain but does not. I wish Amazon would take more responsibility in policing misleading products like this one. Whatever the merits of this ebook, would-be customers should understand that it is deeply mistitled. Emerson and Thoreau produced large, deep bodies of writing, and this ebook does not REMOTELY include anything like the "Complete Works" of either author. Caveat emptor!!

Great content / Decent Kindle File,

I am mostly trying to rate the content of the kindle file with this review. The content is obviously fantastic on a literary level. The kindle file is basic but complete with working table of contents. This is worth every penny and then some.

Amazon.com owns CreateSpace, the "publisher" of this book. Shame on Amazon, then, for lying to its customers by claiming that this volume contains the complete works of Thoreau and Emerson. This is merely a selection, and many works by both philosophers are missing.

You cannot find any of Emerson's poems or the Nature in this incomplete collection. The essay titled Nature is for something else. Be prepared to spend more money for the poems and Nature if you buy this.

As other people have said, this is definitely nowhere near a complete set of works. I bought the kindle edition without seeing the table of contents, and was rather disappointed. I think the title is false advertising.

This is absolutely NOT the complete works of Emerson. Amazon should disclose that the title is a cheap marketing ploy.

The previous reviewer got it perfect, all I want to add is that I don't know if this book is actually "complete," because I've seen works by these authors in other books that aren't in this book.

This book may not contain the complete work of Emerson and Thoreau, but it definitely includes all of their important writing. Unfortunately, this particular edition is very deficient to anyone looking for specific parts of their work. First, the table of contents in this volume provides only an alphabetical listing of titles with no page numbers being given! Secondly, no index is included anywhere. Such a presentation is very deficient and unwieldy whenever one is looking for any topic and/or particular writing of these two giants of American letters.

This Kindle edition is an excellent value, but the title is misleading. While there is an article called NATURE in this collection, it is a different and later one from Emerson's Second Series of Essays. The more important essay called NATURE (from 1836) is not included. Wikipedia mentions its significance with Thoreau. A free version (text or MOBI) of the important version is available from Project Gutenberg. I downloaded the MOBI version, attached it to email, and then sent it to my Kindle--where it seems to work well."In the woods, we return to reason and faith." |
