This review is from: Complete Works for Harpsichord (Audio CD)
I have long been an admirer of the Laurence Cummings CD on Naxos, which included four suites. Many other issues of this music have been removed from the catalogue, including this one by Moroney. It was a pleasure to find it. Cummings has the perfect touch for the languid unmeasured preludes, chaconnes and passacaglia. Moroney's renditions are earthier, but no less impressive. The suites unfamiliar to me are a revelation. Discovering this music is a great pleasure. It is like one felt when encountering Francois Couperin's complete harpsichord works many years ago. Louis only had ten short years of composition before he died prematurely in his 30's, but his output is certainly as inspired as his illustrious nephew's. I would have given it five stars but the sound is rather muddy in places, probably due to the transistion from analogue tapes to CD.
