Book Description

August 22, 1998

For 170 years, Harriet Taylor Mill has been presented as a footnote in John Stuart Mill's life. This volume gives her a separate voice. Readers may assess for themselves the importance and influence of her ideas on "women's" issues such as marriage and divorce, education, domestic violence, and suffrage. And they will note the overlap of her ideas on ethics, religion, arts, and socialism, written in the 1830s, with her more famous husband's works, published 25 years later.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In this massive undertaking, Jacobs (philosophy, Millikin Univ.), who has published previously on Harriet Taylor Mill (HTM), has edited the entirety of Mill's extant writings, including letters, in a volume that is equal parts philosophy, women's studies, and Victorian studies. HTM was the long-time companion to, and eventually the wife of, Utilitarian philosopher John Stuart Mill, with whom she often collaborated. The two Mills were certainly intellectual partners, and HTM, contends Jacobs, has often been misunderstood or unfairly maligned. Jacobs succeeds admirably in her attempt to rehabilitate HTM's place in the history of philosophy. Here, HTM comments as a social thinker on women's rights (education, marriage and divorce, and most importantly domestic violence) and on ethics, religion, and art, among other topics. HTM's works have heretofore been largely unavailable, making this an important contribution. Recommended for academic libraries.?Martha Henn, Birmingham-Southern Coll. Lib., AL
