I'm partial to this volume because it contains the brilliant, funny, dreadful play The Homecoming. I first saw it put on, ten or so years ago, by college actors at a state school in Missouri. Nothing in my years of television watching had prepared me for a play this unnerving and bizarre. I came out of the theatre a new man. For this reason I hesitate to recommend that one "read Pinter" before they go through the shock and awe of seeing him onstage. Or maybe see the film version of "Betrayal" if a live performance isn't an option. Once Pinter has held your head under the water for 2-3 hours then get the books and enjoy.

Of course, the work of Harold Pinter is worth reading on a sheet of toilet paper, but this publisher, Grove Press, did not do justice to his words by the cheap printing job, i.e., light printing of text or missing parts of letters. I will never again buy anything from Grove Press.

It is Harold Pinter - no more needs to be said. He writes superbly, whether plays or essays. This is how to write English and his ideas are worthwhile.

Pinter may not be for everyone but he sure is my taste. His heavily sub textual plays let the reader/audience figure things out for themselves and maintain a desirable sense of mystery and passion that has no definitive answer, as art should be it can be molded by those who see it.

I must read for any theater lover, or someone who think all theater sucks.
