Bloomberg and Volpe have written a refreshingly pragmatic, must-read text that is geared toward getting doctoral students back on the fast track to completing their qualitative dissertations. They expertly unveil the shroud of mysticism that surrounds the process of writing a qualitative dissertation by writing in a succinct, straightforward manner, providing concrete examples, and offering ample practical advice and hope. The ideas presented are extraordinarily clear and simple, yet comprehensive in breadth and profound in depth -- precisely what's needed to complete a qualitative dissertation. I highly recommend this book to every dissertation advisor and student!

The most daunting thing about doing a dissertation is that its both a mammoth task and a brand new one at the same time. I found this book incredibly helpful because it provided practical, seasoned advice in a way that helped me move forward, one step at a time, chapter by chapter. It provided the guidance I needed to remove the uncertainty and doubt that can be so paralyzing at times. They've obviously helped many people get their doctorate, and now I'm one of them!

This book is a great source for anyone working on a qualitative dissertation. I wish I would have bought it a year ago!

I couldn't have done my dissertation without this book. I had the most amazing adviser, but she couldn't be at my side the whole time - ha - but this book was. The writing is clear and concise, and the road map approach highly effective. I've recommended it to a few friends, who all love it as much as I did. It works wonders, really, and helped keep me focused through to the end. I did my dissertation/PhD in education/literacy, but a friend in med anthro found the book to be invaluable, just like I did.

Drs. Bloomberg and Volpe have produced a masterful resource that is a "must have" for anyone tackling the mysterious and often overwhelming task of writing their dissertation proposal. This book has given me the confidence to tackle the next steps knowing that I can turn to it for helpful advice. Written clearly and succinctly, the authors lay out the process step-by-step, in small chunks. The examples, helpful hints, and sample document provided a roadmap to follow, section-by-section and chapter-by-chapter. The references provided are valuable, too. With my now well-worn and dog-eared copy alongside my APA Manual, the proposal emerged as a clear, cogent, and concise document. Kudos and thanks for demystifying the process! The graduation rate of doctoral candidates is sure to rise with this guide by your side.

I only wish Volpe and Bloomberg's "road map," had been available years ago when someone very close to me was making his way through what can be a most daunting process. I have just purchased a copy for a friend who will soon be going through the process, and I am certain he will make good use of my gift!

Clearly written and easy to understand, this is an extremely helpful book for those interested, beginning, or well into writing their dissertation.

I purchased this book to help me with my dissertation but now I find that this is almost page-page, table-to-table copy (albeit simplified) of a well established research design book by John Creswell. I feel cheated.

This is a very useful book for people who are at their dissertation stage. It provides both instruction and application parts for each chapter. Easy to read and great help!

As a quantitative research attempting a doctoral study using qualitative methods, I was at a real loss. This text filled that gap! The examples and chapters are excellent for bringing understanding of how a qualitative dissertation should flow, but don't expect the text to be sufficient for your own dissertation. The examples give a framework and an example, but are not intended to be all inclusive. However, using this text, I was able to outline and understand exactly how the proposal and dissertation should flow, which enabled me to finish the proposal early! A great text for understanding the process.
