4.0 out of 5 stars 1997's most overlooked gem!, May 31, 2000
By
Paul W. Sager (Saint Louis, Missouri) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Complicated (Audio CD)
On Tanya Tucker's 30th album she guides us on an emotional rollercoaster. Perhaps a strange parallel to her own life. But by giving us this parallel, Tucker was able to craft a highly emotional album that allows the fans to relate it to their own life.

Complicated, released in conjunction with her book, Nickel Dreams, spawned the hit single, Little Things. Perhaps one of the most simplist love songs out there. But Tanya didn't just stick to ballads on this album, opening up with jazzy Ridin Out the Heartache to I Don't Believe That's How You Feel these songs make you stomp your feet. They have a New Orleans feel to them. A very different Tanya you might wonder? Love Thing sees Tanya on what she does best, singing about love, lost love and newfound love.

Complicated stayed true to its singers heart, Tanya expressed herself all over the map, but you know what, it worked. Fans loved the album but radio and records did not, perhaps she is a little too rough for the radio now. I would hate to believe that...she may be no Shania, but Shania is definitely no TANYA!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect CD, December 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Complicated (Audio CD)
It's a shame that Tanya's last album for Capital (before a label dispute) is one of her very best (especially after the mediocre "Fire To Fire" that immediately preceded it). This is strong material, played by excellent musicians, and has some of Tanya's best singing ever. The ballads are particularly effective, including the pretty "All I Have To Offer You Is Love", the touching "By the Way", and the moving "It Hurt's Like Love". Two faster numbers, "Complicated" and "You Don't Do It" show Tanya's feisty side. And unquestionably one of her best performances ever recorded is on the album's first cut (and highlight), "Ridin Out the Heartache" -- smokey, hurtin', and heartfelt. It just doesn't get any better than that! Strangely, one of the least effective songs on this disc was the first single, "Little Things" -- a nice, if bland, song that doesn't have the edge that her best stuff contains. But that's a small quibble for a great CD. Buy this one with no fear of disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps this is Tanya's best original album, October 16, 2003
This review is from: Complicated (Audio CD)
From 1986 to 1992 Tanya recorded a series of albums, each of which was a masterpiece. After those albums came two albums that failed to maintain the standards we had grown accustomed to. By the time Tanya recorded this album in 1997, her career seemed to be finished. This album may just be the finest original album of the lot, even better than any of those earlier masterpieces, but did not sell in the quantities that it deserved to. It contains an excellent mix of songs on which Tanya sings as good as ever and the production is superb.

Three singles were released from the album. Riding out the heartache is a defiant song about recovering from a broken relationship. Little things, the only single to make the country top ten, is about how important little things are. I don't believe that's how you feel is a great upbeat song in which Tanya pours scorn on her man who claims he's finished with her. This would surely have been a number one country hit if Tanya were still at the peak of her popularity. All the songs here are brilliant but I must mention the final song, You don't do it. It is a song about dreams that really rocks, contrary to most such songs that are laid-back.

If you've already got the hits and you want to collect Tanya's original albums, this is a great place to start. And if you've got some of Tanya's other masterpieces, you will enjoy this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Romantic album from Tanya. Nothing new., October 19, 2005
By
Ingeborg (Norway, Europe) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Complicated (Audio CD)
It's a different album from Tanya. It seems like after her Can't Run From Yourself album, all her songs have gone into one direction: soppy love songs and more love songs. I miss the more bouncing Tanya with songs about different subjects and with more edge to them.
Though, there ARE many great songs on this album, so it is worth your money!

1. Song about getting over heartache. Upbeat tune and great lyrics. 5/5
2. Cute ballad that will make you smile. 5/5
3. Another ballad, but not a great one. 2/5
4. Great uptempo number with a banjo feel. 575
5. Ballad declaring love. It's Ok. 3/5
6. Mid-tempo song about (you guessed it) love. It gets boring fast, but it's still cute. 3/5
7. Least favourite ballad on the album. 2/5
8. Mid-tempo song with some highlights. 3/5
9. Lovely ballad. 5/5
10. Saucy and cute up-tempo song. My favourite. 5/5
11. Attitude song. Up-tempo. 2nd favourite. Such a surprising way to end CD. 5/5

5.0 out of 5 stars Her Best Work In Years!, May 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Complicated (Audio CD)
This is absolutely the best cd Tanya has turned out in awhile. Every track is polished and perfect. Ridin out the heartache is a powerhouse performance and Little Things is perfectly styled. I don't believe that's how you feel and complicated are two of the best feel good songs I've ever heard. All I have to offer you is love shows real emotion-from someone who has lived the song. This cd should have been a huge success but instead has turned out to be a hidden treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT! Dynamic, from Ballads to Rockers, October 23, 1998
This review is from: Complicated (Audio CD)
This latest album from the Texas Tornado is one of her best. From the opening track "Ridin' Out the Heartache," to the title track, to the closing "You Don't Do It," this collection has punch. But it also features some beautiful ballads. My favorite is, "All I Have To Offer You Is Love," which has a haunting round-neck Dobro accompaniment. "Wishin' It All Away" is another great ballad with a teriffic (but short) Steel solo. Tanya pays tribute to two greats in the fourth track. "I Don't Believe That's How You Feel" was co-written by Harlan Howard; it features a Bob Wills-inspired arrangement, complete with the artist talking over the instrumentals. Sadly, this may be Tanya's last album on EMI, as there is a dispute over its promotion. I hope this situation gets resolved soon, and we can hear more albums like this one!
