Book Description

2004
Bold Venture, 2004. Softcover 8x11. From Indiana Jones to Captain America to The Shadow, Steranko has visualized more classic fictional icons than any other American artist--and now he's added another, in a spectacular volume which incorporates four favorite Steranko themes: pulp fiction, noir mystery, Art Deco, and beautiful women. This features a new painted Steranko cover and was designed from first page to last by the artist. Each adventure--all six of her original 1936 pulp stories--pits the sultry femme fatale against vicious gangsters and secret societies, all of which are captured by evocative double-page title illustrations, plus the original pulp illustrations and saucy, sexy covers.

This review is from: Compliments of the Domino Lady (Paperback)
The Domino Lady is the orphaned daughter of a crusading politician who now uses her skills to expose the corrupt leaders of California. She adopts a sexy alter ego, the Domino Lady, who haunts the mansions of the elite in her tight evening gown. In the manly world of the 30s pulps she was a ground-breaking character who set the template for some of the femme fatales who followed.

But like the Domino Lady herself, the book promises much and delivers little. The stories themselves are fairly mundane capers lacking clever twists or well rounded characters. They're fun; they have a lot of breathless narration and some naïve charm but in the end not all the memorable.

The best feature of the book is the modern illustrations provided by Jim Steranko, they are stylish and clever, everything the concept promises and the stories fail to deliver.

With this book now out of print prices can vary tremendously. I would not pay more than $10-15 for a copy.
