5.0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised.
I wanted a probe thermometer with a temperature-based alarm, and that's what I got. Everything works, and although the usage is a little cryptic the manual explains it well and is easily available online if you lose the copy that's included. It has all the usual timer/alarm features also, and the length and heat-resistance of the probe make it oven- and stovetop-handy...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not good for candy!
I bought two of these; one for me and one for a gift. I used it immediately to make English toffee. The temperature never registered above 220 F and it burned! I checked the temperature with my old candy thermometer (with the mercury) and it said it was over 390 F. So, I took out the other one and tried to make another batch of toffee. I checked the temperature with my old candy thermometer (with the mercury) and it said it was over 390 F. So, I took out the other one and tried to make another batch of toffee. This time I used both this thermometer and my old candy one. Again, this digital thermometer was always low. So, I am returning the both of these digital thermometers. Maybe they work well for meat but I don't want to risk it! I am very disappointed!

Lasted 3 years with heavy use but will NOT measure up to its advertised temperature (392F), so is NOT a candy thermometer.

Confusing instructions but not a show stopper. Probe will break if put in dishwasher (as do they all). Response to button pushes was kinda slow. (for this reason am looking at others)

Accurate temps in the lower ranges (<200F) as compared with a Fluke thermocouple multimeter and two other instant read thermometers in my kitchen.

It has all the usual timer/alarm features also, and the length and heat-resistance of the probe make it oven- and stovetop-handy. Its temperature range covers everything I've ever done in a kitchen, and it can be set to alarm not only when the temperature goes above or below a setpoint, but also if it goes outside a range, which isn't a given with these devices. I had thought of it originally as a bit of a tchotchke, but I use it a lot now, and I'm doing a lot more confectionery, as I don't have to sit and wait and test every few minutes anymore. It appears to have been designed for Celsius and adapted for Fahrenheit (e.g. you can't set it for 234 deg-F, only 233 or 235), but it is accurate in Celsius terms.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes less is more, January 9, 2007

I've had other digital thermometers with pre-programmed temperatures that were just confusing to use. Finding the preferred temperature for any meat or poultry item is such a simple matter (any decent cookbook will have them, many recipes specify, and there are always the many online resources) that I much prefer the straightforward approach here of just inserting the probe and checking the display occasionally. I also LOVE the little gadget that allows you to attach it to a saucepan for candies and other liquids that need careful timing temperature-wise. I happily threw out my old candy thermometer after using this one. It's more accurate and easier to read. Highly recommend.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sooooooooooo.... disappointed!, December 5, 2008
I got this themometer as a Christmas gift last year after years of frustrating candy-making trying to read the mercury through foggy glass on those cheap yellow-capped varieties. Today was the big day! I was kicking off my holiday goodie-making, and planned to use my nifty new CDN Combo Probe. I clipped it on the sauce pan and set the temperature to signal when it reached the "softball" stage. Everything appeared to be functioning correctly until the temp reached around 217. After that, though the sugary syrup was obviously getting hotter and browner, the temp. readout on my nifty new CDN Combo Probe was DECREASING...down to the 170's! I rifled through my gadget drawer and pulled out a glass tube thermometer and the mercury quickly shot up to 250+ degrees. I tried my nifty new CDN Combo Probe twice more in other recipes with similar results. It never read more than 217 before it started counting down. It's too late for me to return this overpriced clock/timer now. Bummer.... If you're hoping to use this thermometer for something that gets hotter than 200 degrees, save your money! Back to the yellow-capped variety for me!

This was purchased as a replacement for my 20+ year-old trusty bulb candy thermometer that broke. I make caramels at least once a month and cannot live without a candy thermometer. So as soon as I received my new thermometer I of course made a batch of caramels. The readout is very clear, the clip worked just fine on my pot. I was able to adjust the depth of the probe to get an accurate reading. When the caramel reached the correct temp, the probe and clip came off the side of the pot smoothly allowing me to pour the caramel in the pan. I would recommend this product.

2.0 out of 5 stars Works for tea temperature and timing, May 19, 2007
This review is from: Component Design Digital Candy Thermometer, Timer and Clock (Kitchen)
Works well to measure water temperature in a tea kettle, though the temperatures here rarely exceed 180F (anything higher you let the water boil), and as a countdown timer when tea seeping in pot.

Buttons poorly designed, and wiggle, resulting in many button presses that do nothing. Glue on a smaller magnetic strip on the back has come off, and the other magnet is not strong. This makes the device liable to rotate or creep down the refrigerator.

4.0 out of 5 stars CDD Candy Thermometer, October 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Component Design Digital Candy Thermometer, Timer and Clock (Kitchen)
At first when I set up the product I could not get the probe to go into the holder. My husband figured out you have to pinch the holder to allow the probe to go in. I emailed the company about this as their directions did not indicate this. They never responded.

Overall, once you get used to the machinations it could work well, but you have to make sure the oil is touching the probe correctly, otherwise you don't get a good reading....

I would give it four **** compared to other products I have used through the years....

5.0 out of 5 stars Performs well, measures accurately, January 5, 2011
I have owned this probe for about 3 years and it still performs well and measures temperatures accurately. The functions are easy to figure out and program. The probe cord is a decent length and I haven't found it to kink up. Using the programmable probe takes all the guess work out of cooking roasts and poultry just right; it also works well with our outdoor grill, especially for slow cooking. I find the temperature alert sound to be just the right volume to hear in the another room without being annoyingly loud. The count up timer function is useful to determine the length of an entree's cook time to help me gauge the cooking time range for the same entree in the future.

I have this exact timer though mine says "Pampered Cheff" on it. I have had it for several years now and LOVE IT! I don't cook my meats anymore by guessing how long they need to bake i just use the thermometer. Also VERRY handy when smoking meat! i have a bullet water smoker and I can just leave this probe in the meat and that way I don't have to open the lid which looses valuable heat and adds time to the smoking process.

I have also used it for candy and had no problem with it reading the high temperatures. even with hard candies that have to reach 300. Though I prefer the older method of using a candy thermometer because this is a instant read device and it is hard to tell when the syrup is the exact right temperature as the desplay fluctuates as it reads the hot spots in the syrup. I reccomend this to anyone I get the chance to.
