Great device, you need to know a bit to use it well.,

I've used and then owned IR thermometers for years. They used to cost hundreds of dollars. I've used a couple of commercial ones in the kitchen the past few years... they work well, and don't need to touch what is being measured. But they cost about a hundred dollars. This one is $40. The one disadvantage with this one is that the viewing angle for measurement is wide (about 1" at 1" distance); you need to be close. The more costly ones have much narrower viewing angles... you can be further away. Advantages: you don't need to touch what you're measuring, measurements take about one second, and they are accurate. Highly recommended. Good instructions.

This is very compact and works very quickly. I have tested it on boiling water, ice water and hot oil and its readings are consistent with other thermometers as well as expected values. Its limitation is the maximum temperature being below 500 degrees F. For high temp. cooking it would be nice to establish a difference between a 500 degree griddle or wok and an 800 degree (or hotter) griddle or wok.
