4.0 out of 5 stars Magnet good, rack hook bad
I bought this based on the Cook's Illustrated review. The first thing I noticed is the hanging hook doesn't fit the heavy racks in our Viking oven. Fortunately the magnet mount works well and I stuck it on the back wall of the oven under the light. The third mounting method is a flip down wire stand. I haven't tried this but it seems like it will be fine for a flat...

2.0 out of 5 stars terrible quality control
The first unit came in with a dented dial face inside the case where only the factory (in China) could touch it. It caused the pointer to drag and jerk as it tried to warm up. I sent it back for exchange and waited for the second unit to arrive. About 10 days later I tried the replacement unit and it seemed to be about 25-30 degrees off. Then I noticed it read 105 degrees...

I haven't tried this but it seems like it will be fine for a flat surface like a cookie sheet or pizza stone.

Aside from mounting issues the thermometer seems functional. I'd prefer a bigger more readable model that I can read through the oven window.

This thermometer has a hook on top which makes it easy to find an out of the way place to put it in the oven. It's reasonably accurate according to my Fluke thermoprobe. It's a reasonable size and more importantly it's very easy to read. The price is right. I can't imagine a better basic oven thermometer.

Then I noticed it read 105 degrees sitting on the kitchen counter when the house was about 70 degrees. I contacted CDN in Portland and they offered to send me a free replacement so I returned the second unit to Amazon for a refund. Even the one from CDN was off by 20 degrees so I used a mercury lab thermometer and adjusted the plate inside the back of the thermometer (technically it's not adjustable) to read 100 degrees C when the lab thermometer did. It is slow to come up to temp but so is my old thermometer, so don't believe your oven when it beeps ready 5 minutes after you turn it on. Give the oven 15 minutes to come up to temp.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Little Oven Thermometer So Far, April 21, 2010

The little hanging or standing oven thermometers make me totally crazy. Assuming you can get them to hang or stand as needed, the minute I put something into the oven they drop to the bottom. I have tried every brand out there. Enter this little beauty. The magnet is the key to success. I place it on the side of the oven and I know exactly what the temperature is. As each oven is different, I suggest you test it in the center of the oven first, note the temperature and then put it along the side and compare. You can make mental adjustments for the slight difference in temperature. Works in both a large and a smaller countertop oven.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ordered 2 thermometers/One works, Other doesn't, March 5, 2010

I purchased 2 of the magnetic CDN oven thermometers. My oven is in Celsius so I use thermometers all the time. I liked the magnetic capability. The magnet secured one of them to the back of my oven wall. The other I hung on the rack in the front. Well, I set the oven high. The rear thermometer progressed up to 400 degrees, the front one didn't get past 300 degrees. I didn't know which was correct. So, I hung my old non-magnetic thermometer on the front rack also. That thermometer quickly registered to 400 degrees.

So I guess one of them works and the other doesn't.

Another problem is that the numbers are so small and difficult to read (even with the oven light on) when you attach the thermometer to the the back of your oven wall. You need a thermometer in the front to see the number adequately.

I gave it a 3 because one works. Frankly, I wouldn't purchase this brand again. My old cheapy one from the supermarket "after Thanksgiving clearance sale" works better. Go figure.

I would need several other thermometers to make sure this one is accurate, but what it seems to have shown is that, while our oven eventually does get to the temp we set it at, its beep signal goes off way too soon. Set it for 350, and in five minutes it claims it's there. This thermometer says, No, it's only 250. Wait ten more minutes, and it does indeed level off at 350. So that's good to know. This is easy to mount and easy to read.

I'm quite pleased with this handy thermometer. I use the magnet so that it's out of my way when I have something in the oven and it works great. Turns out my oven is closer to the expected temperature than I thought!

I purchased this based on the CooksIllustrated.com review. It always read higher than my oven's sensor (and I already know my oven doesn't run that far off). Within 6 months, it simply stopped working.

1.0 out of 5 stars Room temp 125F?, December 17, 2010

Right out of the box, this thing reads 125 degrees F in a room that was actually 68. What's even worse is that there is no way to adjust the thing, like most thermometers similar to this.

I had high hopes for this because of it's magnetic mount. Hanging and standing units are hard to read, no matter where you place them in the oven.
