Thanks, North Texas and Eugene Corporon,
This review is from: Vincent Persichetti (Audio CD)
O.k., I confess to naivete' but the North Texas Wind Symphony seems to have outdone the Winds of the London Symphony e.g. compare Pageant on this CD with the version on the Naxos-produced CD. North Texas seems to resonate deeper in the percussion and the brass intonations seem a bit brighter. Regardless, I think it is important to study Persichetti's music primarily because of the timing of his wind band compositions i.e. 1950s. As I recall, this was the time that Fredric Fennel basically invented the wind ensemble venue. The contribution of this invention is observed in our high schools and colleges where the wind ensemble is the premier band. My favorite piece is Divertimento because it sounds 'contemporary' and, to me, 'contemporary' means exploration of the diversity of wind instruments and their intonations and enriched percussion.
