There is one set of RCA red/white audio plugs which I am not using.

Enter this little item, which allows me to run my S-Video systems through an HDMI input on my TV, upscaling the picture quality up to 1080p resolution.

This product solves the problem, and works great with very little setup.

After hooking up my old standard-def consoles to two different HD televisions (LCD and plasma), it became apparent that the built-in scaling and deinterlacing that these televisions performed was pretty poor. And neither had S-video input. This device solved that problem.

Pros: It works, produces a nicely scaled 720p HDMI signal from component and S-video inputs. The scaling/deinterlacing it performs is noticeably better than the built-in scaling on both televisions I tested.

Cons: The output is always "on" whether or not the connected devices are on. So if you have an auto-switching HDMI switch, you'll want to give this converter lowest priority. Also, the deinterlacing is good but not perfect, and you can still see the interlacing lines when very fast motion is taking place on the screen.

Overall, it did exactly what I needed, and did it well.

For informational purposes, I believe the original manufacturer's model number for this device is "Lenkeng LKV361".

I really can't get over how happy I am with this converter. Back in September, I bought a 22' LG 1080p LED Monitor with HDMI, DVI and VGA imputs. Although it works fine for my Desktop, 360 and PS3, my SNES and Gamecube are left in the dark. The setup is almost too symplistic. Plug in AC adapter, insert S-Video cable or Composite, and go. The converter has the option to output either 1080p or 720p, although I don't notice much of a difference. The progressive scan is great; no jagged edges or other glitches to speak of. Although the price may be slightly higher than I would have liked, I am fully satisified with my purchase.

So if you're like me and you play retro games, you might finding playing them on newer TVs is problematic. That's because these older consoles (Xbox to Atari) were designed with 4:3 CRTs in mind... so their aspect ratio doesn't translate well to HDTV standards. On a raw input you get artifacts, blurring, image tearing, and all manner of image imperfections. Or at least you do if your HDTV has an inferior upscaler built into it. Luckily though, using an external upscaler, you can bypass much of this malaise. Or perhaps your HDTV doesn't even have something as archaic as s-video or RCA inputs, but this converter allows you to get around that problem.

Unfortunately for the longest time external upscalers were tremendously expensive, until now. Using this particular product, which is reasonably priced, you can get a quality upscaler and play your older games on your HDTV beautifully, in 720 or 1080 (there's a switch on the box). This particular upscaler does an extremely good job of translating an s-video (or RCA) signal into an HDMI stream that is free of blurring, artifacting, tearing, etc. While it may not be the best upscaler in existence, it certainly is much better than most stock upscalers built into standard HDTVs.

Just make sure you have a free power outlet nearby, the converter requires external power through an included adapter. No big deal in my book, as I can understand how electricity is needed to power the chips converting the image signal... why other people can't understand that I don't know. It's not like enough volts are provided from an s-video signal alone to power a converter, duh...

So bust out your old Genesis or Jaguar, and hook them up to this converter, and game on regardless of your HDTVs traditional dilemmas. Thanks to this product, those dilemmas are solved.

I never heard of a RCA to HDMI converter, but after researching Amazon.com and the web, I found this item.

The reason I wanted one was because I have a VIZIO M320NV 32-Inch 1080p LED LCD HDTV with Razor LED Backlighting, Black, Logitech Revue Companion Box with Google TV and Keyboard Controller, and DirecTV model R15.

At this time, the only unit that DirecTV makes that offers HDMI connection will cost me about $200-300, plus the monthly cost of upgrading my satellite service to HD (required for the new box). Revue works perfectly without satellite or cable television, but to get full use (of all of the additional functions like controlling your set-top box (STB)), you need to connect your television provider's STB to the Revue, which only accepts HDMI--thus the need for this converter.

Once out of the box, I connected the DirecTV using RCA (audio) and S-Video (you can use all RCA instead of S-Video) into the converter box. Then I connected the HDMI from the converter to the Revue. And lastly, I connected the power cord to converter box.

I ran the setup for my STB on the Revue, and there were no issues. Picture comes in great--Not a true 1080p because of my DirecTV subscription, but it's like watching a DVD on a DVD up-converter for HDTV. (This doesn't bother me because anything I want to watch in HD, I get it from Blu-Ray, HD video streaming or HDTV antenna.)

If you still use a VCR, an old DVD player, or video game system, this is a perfect addition for your HDTV.

ADDENDUM: The product description reads, "HDMI output is 720p", but there is button on the item to change the output to 720 or 1080p. (I have it set on 1080p.)
