Biography

If a three-cord strand is not easily broken, then what can be said of five? One could say it’s indestructible – at least, it is if you’re talking about LA Symphony.

Together, FLYNN, Joey the Jerk, Sharlok Poems, UNO Mas, and CookBook weathered every storm and stood the test of time as underground hip-hop royalty. Now, with a decade of beats and rhymes under their collective belt, the members of LA… Read more in Amazon's L.A. Symphony Store

A new and vital hip-hop crew is born with this set, and their name is LA Symphony. The group represents a united effort of nine diverse MCs and one DJ gathered from all corners of the Los Angeles scene. On Composition No. 1, the slinky, melodic vocal deliveries of these immensely engaging MCs seamlessly intertwine around tight beats, deep bass grooves, and innovative sounds. With the hard-hitting, drop-beat-laden "San Diego", LA Symphony recall Cypress Hill; only where the Hill tread on the dark side--albeit the humorous quarter of the dark side--with their rhymes of Glocks and bongs, LA Symphony lean toward the upbeat and even jubilant. Composition No. 1 is downright fun without veering into De La Soul territory, and in this day of too many self-important rappers and MCs, it's a welcome breath of fresh air. --Michael Wells

Product Description

Composition No. 1 is the debut album from the hip hop crew L.A. Symphony. This CD embodies the creativity and energy that separates LA Symphony from so many of its contemporaries. The tracks are full of life, movement, and meaning. As lyricists, the members are realistic in approach to their lives as hip hop artists in Los Angeles and exercise a dynamic range of subject matter. The sounds are similar to that of the Native Tongues, the Pharcyde, Black Eyed Peas, CookBook & UNO Mas, and FLYNN.

4.0 out of 5 stars what the funk?, February 19, 2002

Tired of verbose 'underground style' posturing? Sick of 'banging' hip-hop overrun with commercial interests? Can't find that perfect album for driving around on lazy summer days? Well look no further because la symph have the remedy. Don't be put off by the 'christian underground' tags as they do nothing to reflect the unabashed mid 90s hip-hop ethic that these guys espouse. Valuing fun over multisyllabic wizadry and antagonistic battle rhymes, la symph sounds like de la soul circa '3 feet high..' collaborating with Jurassic 5 and Black Eyed Peas of present day. Derivative yet still creating their own distinct sound, this group will bring you back to the native tongue years as they rip tracks such as 'composition no 1', 'night after night', and 'everybody get'. Production does fall off at times resulting in weaker songs such as 'little shirts', but this is made up for with tracks such as 'look at me dancing' - a sort of love or hate song in the vein of the freestyle fellowship.

LA symph have brought the fun back into hip-hop without objectifying women or caricaturing the 'ghettos'. With God on their side these guys can't really go wrong.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hip-Hop at its best!!!!!!, September 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Composition No.1 (Audio CD)
If you buy one CD this year make it LA Symphony. Think of pharcyde, jurrasic 5, and black eyed peas all rolled into one, but with clean lyrics. For once a group where each member is as talented as the next. If you're as tired as I am of hearing Juvenile talk about money and Missy talk about the matrix, then check out LA symphony for some fresh/original hip-hop.

5.0 out of 5 stars not enough stars! THE EPITOME OF LOS ANGELES STYLE... O.G.!, January 31, 2000

This review is from: Composition No.1 (Audio CD)
these foos are the tightest MCs in the universe. This is the type of stuff I'd make my sister and parents listen to... regardless if they were rhymers or not I would be proud to know these doods..well from what they express on their albums.. these MCs (NOT "dead weight" rappers) can move a crowd with utmost perfection.. happy beats homogonize with the lyrics as opposed to those beligerent, battle type of rappers. Words they convey fabricate images of the positive aspects of L.A. Life which is what we need more. ARTICULATE, VERBOSE, HUMBLE, INTELLIGIBLE MCs comprise a post millenium hip hop style .. L.A. Symphony rises amongst the best along with FREESTYLE FELLOWSHIP, J5, STYLES OF BEYOND, DILATED PEOPLES, BEAT JUNKIES, VISIONARIES, THE ARSONISTS(new york) and everyone else founded from the streets of L.A.!
