4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Classroom Management
I had to buy and read this book for a classroom management class. It is a great book for comparing the most recent research available. However, you usually need to read five to ten pages of what could have been stated in a paragraph. I do feel that I really understand the material by the time I finish reading the book. I was required to purchase this book for a class I am currently taking. While the content of the book could be useful, the manner in which it is written is laden with ridiculous run-on ideas that could be communicated much more clearly. Here is an example from page 28:

"Regardless of the extent to which teachers decide to adapt to the norms and parenting styles of their student's culture or systematically assists students in learning to adapt while maintaining their cultural values, the point is that as educators we are willing to examine our own beliefs and way of working with students in light of the contextual variables existing in the classroom, school and community."

To students who may be required to read this text: Good luck. Perhaps you can change classes before it is too late.

To professors who may add this book to their required reading list: Please, please, please pass on this text and choose something more relevant and tangible for your students.

To educators who may choose this book to answer questions or add to their professional library: choose something else. This book is useless. My advice is your time will be better spent going to talk to teachers who have been in the field rather than reading this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly comprehensive, informative, and well-researched!, April 10, 2008
I felt I should write this review after seeing the bad wrap it got from another reviewer. I am doing my thesis on classroom discipline and out of all the books I've read on the subject, this one gave me the best insight and critique of the history of discipline research as well as great ideas for teachers on how to go about creating their own classroom management plan. This book touched on all areas important to successful classroom management; I have not found everything covered here in any other single source. This book is a must for all new teachers who really want to succeed!

Even though this book is more of a textbook, I have really found it pretty useful. I'm going to begin my fifth year of teaching and I have found ideas and strategies that I could use. It has ideas for both lower and upper grades. It is very comprehensive, covering discipline techniques to parent/teacher conferences.

I was required to purchase and read this book for our classroom management course. I did not mind the price as often with my text books I use them again for references in real life and academic pursuits. I was disappointed in not only the content but the presentation as well. It is not reader friendly in its appearence and is so repetative and bogged down with unneccessary details that it is hard to figure out what the point is. If this is a text book designed to aid in learning it does a poor job. One cannot easily navigate within the book which makes it difficult to make connections throughout. In addition, the anecdotes shared appear to be mainly from the author's own lives or their daughter's and serve only to self congratulate themselves on doing a good job but are not useful in any way to the outsider looking for legitimate support. There is one section where the authors talk about going into a school to observe. While there they intefered with a student teacher and offered her a better way of handling students than the cooperating teacher had. The cooperating teacher was of course angry over their interference and lashed out at them. The authors instead of seeing this as a lesson in tact and appropriate behavior on their part decided to wag their judgemental finger at this cooperating teacher for not being open minded to new ideas that work. The truth is, I understood that stepping on someone's toes can hurt... they showed perhaps a good example of better classroom management but in doing so isolated a colleague, a fellow teacher, which in my mind is a poor way to collaborate. First of all, if the place of the author in this situation was to observe then they skewed their findings horribly by getting involved. This makes me question their motives and their eventual findings. Second of all, they not only alienated the cooperating teacher mentioned in the book but they also alienated me as a human being reading the book wondering what judgement they would pass on me, what questions they would make to interfere with my teaching of this student teacher. Thirdly, it is evident throughout that they have little regard for other professionals. They show few examplets of work other than their own and they make no attempt to draw connections from theorist to real life. They merely place quoatations throughout the book.

It is a dreadful waste of time and money. I am concerned that schhools are using this as a text which makes me wonder whehter instructors are given the time to make a clea evaluation of a text before requiring it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive classroom management: Creating communitites of support and solving problems, August 12, 2009
The condition was good. It had been a sample used by publisher for academic review, so the cover was distorted. Therefore, the book looked cheap compared to the other textbooks of peers.
