This book has eliminated any skepticism with my choices as an actor and encouraged me to live within the scene. As strange as it sounds, it's offered me freedom. The text provides a very clear analysis of techniques that work rather than a bunch of formulaic, off the wall methods. The author speaks my language and it resonates with me more than any other materail that I've read thus far.

I have read most of the popular acting books and none match the sheer practicality and usability of this comprehensive companion. Nelson goes above and beyond with his extensive research on the craft of acting throughout history and on human communication in general. His philosophy, as it is explained with elegance and precision, takes the ambiguity out of acting and leaves you with clarity and extreme moment-to-moment specificity. I personally had not latched on to other techniques because they all seemed a bit vague in their use and left up to the chance of being "in the moment". Through a wide range of teachings and very doable exercises, Nelson gives step by step instructions to being in the moment and truly takes the pressure off the actor in doing so. This book is bold, intelligent and refreshing. Not taking to heart its messages would be a crime for the modern-age actor.

Shawn Nelson’s new book is truly the ‘Actor’s Companion’, whether you are a novice or seasoned professional. It is clear, straight-forward and concise in its delivery and in-depth in its resonance. In this book, I found the tools I have been looking for to hone my ‘preparation’. It’s the ‘missing link’ that I have been looking for. The exercises and scenarios will make sense and will enable the actor to dissect any script, understand its message and deliver a thoughtful interpretation, resulting in a great performance every time. This will be your ‘go-to’ tool to help hone your craft and keep your performances fresh and insightful. For any actor, this is the best Christmas present you can give to yourself or make it a special present for any aspiring or seasoned actor in your life.

This book covers so, so much. I've read it cover to cover; but I believe its real value is in being a reference guide that will point me in the right direction no matter what type of acting scenario I am working through (it covers them all from my perspective). I have to admit that I didn't absorb everything the first time around, but I feel more confident as an actor simply having this as a guide I can access anytime. It's very clear that the author has been fine tuning the material in this book for quite a long time. The result is a very thorough, clear, and practical guide for actors, directors, and writers.

Having studied acting for a few years, both in college, and through professional coaches, all requiring the use of various acting books, I can say that what this book offers is unprecedented. With its dialogue-centric approach, I've come to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the science and delivery of words, as well as their impact both on and off the stage. This WILL give you an edge, as it addresses what many method coaches seem to leave out. Not to mention the thoughtfully placed quotes and numerous exercises. I'll be looking for more of Shawn Clement Nelson's work!

One of THE best acting coaches in the industry has at long last published his brilliance. For decades Shawn Nelson has broadened the talent, insight, and understanding of actors, writers and directors in stage, film, and television. Comprehensive Contemporary Acting is the result of his years of hands-on experience and discoveries. This not a lot of theories but real insight into the human condition. How to make your work truthful and believable. I promise anyone in the creative arts that Mr. Nelson's book will be your new bible.
