I DO NOT recommend this book to other homeschoolers!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills, Grade 2 (Paperback)
This is far from a comprehensive curriculum, and it is an extremely misleading title. It is simply a huge book of worksheets, and poor quality worksheets at that. They claim that the advantage of these worksheets is that they are all in color, but what they fail to mention is that the graphics are just plain ugly, very unappealing to the eye. They state that all subjects are covered, and again this is a stretch of the truth. While subjects are covered, they are extremely light, mostly touching on a subject with no comprehension. Math skills are few and far between. Mostly this is a book filled with grammer worksheets, and it is literally overkill on this subject. I am sorry that I wasted my money on this item. If you are looking for a truly comprehensive curriculum,I highly suggest a curric with the title - Home Education Curriculum : Grade 2 You can purchase this through amazon as well, and it is truly a wonderful curriculum! We are using the second grade level now,and I plan to buy each grade level for our homeschool. You can click on the about me page beside my name at the top of this review, and read my detailed review on Home Education Curriculum : Grade 2 Happy Homeschooling :)

lots of pages for the money, but disorganized,
By A Customer
This review is from: Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills, Grade 2 (Paperback)
These pages are broken up into daily assignments, I think. For instance, there will be a page of math, a page of reading comprehension, a page of spelling, a page of social studies, and a page of science. Then another of math, reading again, spelling... etc. I think the parent is supposed to give the kid 5 pages in a row, and think, "well, he studied every subject today." This is VERY impractical, for the simple reason that no 2 children are alike in their studies. For instance, the math was WAY too easy for my 2nd grader. But the reading comprehension was a bit difficult. It would have been easier if ALL the math was together in one place in the book, and we could just pick the pages that were at her level. Instead, I had to spend a great deal of time picking through the book to find the correct pages for her. Another thing that didn't make sense is the way the phonics lessons are thrown in there. The kids are supposed to do reading comprehension pages at a much higher level than the phonics pages. The other real problem I had with these books is the social studies. They seem to have a definite political "lean" to them, and I was not comfortable with that. One day I went through and tore all these pages out and shredded them. On the upside, the pages are very pretty, not too much per page, nice pictures, and lots of colors. It's rather inexpensive for the number of pages, too. Other American Education Publishing workbooks are much better, and I've been pleased with them, but I would skip this series next time.

This is a great workbook to supplement the unit study or thematic approach to homeschooling. Especially if your child loves worksheets!

This is a very good learning tool. I homeschool and it's just hard enough to get the young mind going and easy enough for them to catch on. I love these books!

Excellent, clearly laid out, good skills level targetting,

I like this book. My 6 year old likes this book. We love the variety, so if you have to do some 'academic' work in your plan for the day, but dont feel like doing spelling, you can flip to the reading chapter, to the maths chapter, to the comprehension chapter. Its very clearly laid out, its fun (where a lot of Grade 2 material can be made to look pretty boring)and looks fun, and seems to cover most of the basics. It is NOT a be all and end all for a Grade 2-er, but for someone not following a set curriculum, this is a great provider of material so you know you are covering your bases. It could also be a great top-up if for some reason you need to top up what is happening at your school, or for example to cover in a summer. I would really recommend this.

good, solid workbook,

Although there have been some negative reviews in this series, I have personally found this book to be very through and helpful to my 6 year old. It covers the core subjects for 2nd graders such as reading, language arts, spelling, and math. They all well presented, except the math part is a bit easy for my son. Not uncommon as grade levels in different states are different.
I think the set up of a certain number of pages per day is convenient, and just the right amount to keep his interest. The colors and pictures are great, and the price is right! I especially like the teaching suggestions in the back of the book - giving you the option of doing as little or as much as YOU feel comfortable doing on any given subject with your child. For math, I find the Beestar worksheets (a nice web site at www.beestar.org) suit my son better. But overall, this is very good workbook. I fully intend to continue using this series as long as I can.

Have purchased these books for years, some grade levels didn't meet my expectations... this one is wonderful! Great for summer prep, vacation and sick days. Highly recommend.

I wish it were organized differently.,

This is a nice work book to supplement my second graders online curriculum, but I wish it were organized like my six graders book of the same title.
The second grade version (at least the one I received, which has a different cover as the one I ordered - same title) is organized by a daily work guideline rather than subjects. For example, the second grade book will have math, language, reading, etc, in the first couple of pages, and then repeat another group of daily subjects. There are, however, some nice unit type studies. My six graders workbook of this title is grouped according to subject. Math is in a group, reading comprehension in a section, grammar, etc. That is a more logical way to organize a book of this size. I will be using this 2nd grade book, but it requires more work on me to find the right material to give her on any given day than it would have had it been organized by subject.

I really like this series of books. It has been very useful to us. It doesn't cover everything, but it helps to fill holes that would otherwise be left in the kids' learning, making the teacher more free to cover the rest of the subjects as in depth as desired. I really thought the science pages were interesting and the kids enjoyed doing the experiments.
