A rare find in the Digital Imaging jungle,

You can certainly imagine that being the editor for the longest established web site on the Internet for design and publishing books, I see a lot of imaging, photography and Photoshop books. Each quarter there are dozens of new offerings dealing with the subject of digital photography that all compete for pairs of eyes. When it all boils down, the techniques, methods and lessons are all basically the same. Where the difference truly shines through is in the
* presentation, and * insight by the author. Duncan Evans is truly a gifted visualist and author -- and this book is without question one of the nicer books I've seen in a long, long time. While Duncan covers virtually all issues surrounding digital photography for both beginners and intermediates, he does so with clear, succinct writing and thoroughly enjoyable visuals. Yes, he covers the mundane -- and yes, many experienced pros may find the book too simple. However Evans also covers the illusive topics of digital photography that are all too essential for even the intermediate photographer or digital image smith -- printers; color and mono inkjet printing; alternative ink systems; calibration; paper types and all manner of digital effects. His "White Out" technique is second to none, and easily worth the price of the entire book. I even requested larger blow-ups of the image for my review of this book in the Design Bookshelf... where all our editors voted it a smashing "Editor's Choice"

Strong Bifocals Necessary,

Oh, how I wanted to keep this book. It is beautiful. However, within 10 minutes of reviewing it, I knew it would have to be returned. The font size is about 8 with insets and various other parts even tinier. Very hard on the eyes and too much work to make it worthwhile for me.

First of all the fonts are tiny and tinier. I have to take my glasses off and put the book up close to my face in order to read it.
Secondly, the author's ability to explain his subjects leaves a lot to be desired. I can read a paragraph five times and still not understand what he's just said. Thirdly, the layout of the book, while at first very appealing, is one where exactly two facing pages are given to a subject. That may look nice but when one subject takes a bit more effort to reveal its secrets than some other less complicated subject, what does the author do? He truncates the explanation and the print is so small you cannot believe it. Sometimes the print is tiny even when there is plenty of room for larger print! Figure that out. Fourthly, some of the photographs are awful with terrible color casts to them. To be sure many photos are good and even excellent, but what is going on with those other ones in a book purporting to tell you how to get good results on the printed page? And lastly, to keep this shorter than it otherwise would be, this is a lousy book for gaining an understanding of much of anything. I suppose if you already knew all about the subject, you could enjoy looking at the pictures and be pleased with yourself that you didn't feel the need to read anything. I'll never buy anything from this publisher again whose aim seems to have been to put out a book that looked nice and to hell with clarity. I guess I'm glad it is a short book.
