The information nurses need…when, where, and how they need it!

Here’s the information nurses and nursing students need to know about laboratory and diagnostic tests! This nursing-focused, easy-to-read handbook provides all of the information you need to understand how tests work, interpret their results, and provide quality patient care—pre-test, intra-test, and post-test.

Tests and procedures are listed in alphabetical order by their complete name for quick reference. The integrated index allows fast searches by abbreviation, synonym, disease/disorder, specimen type, or test classification. Plus, a Body Systems Appendix includes a list of common laboratory and diagnostic tests for each body system as well as nutrition-related lab tests.

5.0 out of 5 stars NURSING STUDENT MUST!!!! November 15, 2012
Format:Flexibound|Verified Purchase
This book is AMAZING for nursing students! Other students have looked through this book of mine and then purchased their own, because you can look up any lab value, and then reasons why it might be high, reasons why it might be low, dangerous levels, symptoms related to being high or low, nursing implications on how to correct it or just implications to watch out for with patients with these lab values. Also, this company provides the one year online access with the purchase of this book! So i am able to go to the website from my computer or phone and just type in the lab name and get all of the information without having to flip through my book. Its AWESOME!!!!!!!

The guide is clear and easy to use. It has too much information to paraphrase to my instructors liking AND the implications they so firmly insist upon are never the vague implications in this book, "Wash your hands." "Hold gauze on venipuncture site until it stops bleeding." They want to know if you need to be vigilant to asses for changes in level of consciousness or decreased respirations. That is not covered well here. What would have been better is if in the "Decreased in:" and "Increased in:" section there was a list of signs and symptoms. That way if the patient has low albumin levels, for example, you can look for different S&S for like liver damage vs. malnutrition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Reference June 1, 2012
By Laurie
Format:Flexibound|Verified Purchase
This book is perfect to keep in your locker and look up that odd lab value and make sense of the whole picture. It is organized beautifully and makes finding a particular test value easy to find and understand. As a new nurse, it really helped me to understand and peice together what is happening in my patient so I can aticipate treatment and give them the best care possible.

This book is an excellent resource for the student or novice nurse to help able them to understand laboratory and diagnostic tests, and the nursing implications involved with your patient care. This book will definitely remain an item not for resale. It has become an invaluble tool in my nursing career.

2.0 out of 5 stars Look before you buy February 26, 2011
Format:Flexibound|Verified Purchase
I typically use a PDA for clinicals but ordered this so I could note lab values per my instructor or the clinical facility. I pre-ordered this book and wish I'd had a chance to look at it before buying it. The pages are colored/shaded which makes notations difficult to read. The worst part is that it's shaded in pink. The book is very busy and I find that distracting. I would return it but one of my daughters wrote my name across the edge in big black sharpie letters. I guess I'll have to find a way to make it work. I would suggest looking at this before buying it just to make sure that the color and over-designing of it is something you can work with.

3.0 out of 5 stars buy the electronic version October 27, 2012
Format:Flexibound
You don't need the paper version and it's pain to carry with you. The electronic version comes in the Unbound online package and is very worth while for nursing students to own.

I am a nursing student and have found no real use for this book. I thought it would be good for care plans or helping understand labs but it just is not for me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
This book is way too large to use as a reference when you are doing clinical rotations. There are hundreds of websites more simplified that are free to use.
