THE FIFTH VOLUME (COVERING 1868 TO 1880) OF ROBERTS' IMPORTANT HISTORY,
By
This review is from: A Comprehensive History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: Volume 5 (Paperback)
Brigham Henry Roberts (1857-1933) was a Mormon leader, historian, and politician who published the A Comprehensive History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 6 Volume Set plus Index (Box Set (of which this is the first volume), as well as other books (such as The Mormon Doctrine of Deity (Signature Mormon Classics, No 3.)). He was denied a seat as a member of United States Congress because of his practice of plural marriage. This 6-volume series was originally published between 1909-1915, and revised by Roberts in 1930; the sixth volume is A Comprehensive History of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter Day Saints Volume VI 6.Here are some quotations from the book: "But never was there given in modern times such widespread attention to a religious movement as to the Church of the Latter-day Saints in the period covered by Volume V of its history." (Pg. xviii) "Brigham Young was opposed to his people rushing to the gold mines of California in 1849, and also in the early years of the decade following. He held that such a course was foreign to their mission, since they had settled in the Great Basin to found a city and a commonwealth..." (Pg. 64) "...an incident occurred in Salt Lake City and many other places in Utah, that ought to go far towards correcting a very general misapprehension respecting the plural marriage system in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, viz., that plural marriage existed against the desire and will of the women of that church..." (Pg. 231) "And yet it was not because the Bible sanctioned polygamy that it was accepted as matter of faith and practice by the Latter-day Saints. On the contrary, it became a principle of faith and practice with them because God had revealed it to them through their Prophet as a true and righteous principle in itself, and permissible within certain limitations and conditions, and for specific purposes. The Latter-day Saints appeal to the Bible for its sanction was merely for corroboration of the righteousness of the principle revealed to them in the New Dispensation..." (Pg. 294) "This superiority (of plural marriage) over monogamy... can only be affirmed in the name of the ... revelation on marriage referred to, by which a consecrated fatherhood and motherhood is provided for the race. To put the defense of Latter-day Saint polygamy on a less exalted plane than this... is to debase the institution..." (Pg. 298) "This (divorce) case of '(Ann Eliza Webb) Young vs. (Brigham) Young' was malicious and vindictive, and instituted purely for extortion, and for the vexation and annoyance of Brigham Young. It was brought into court against the plainest principles of law, and its record is a disgrace to those who instituted it." (Pg. 454) |
