Book Description

0769500749 978-0769500744 July 27, 1999 1
This new dictionary contains 30,000 computer-related entries divided equally between the English and Russian languages. The authors have compiled a modern dictionary with concise and comprehensive lexicon. What sets this dictionary apart from other available publications is inclusion of useful Russian-English translations and outdated word lists.

The dictionary includes many new terms including words that did not exist - particularly in the Russian language - as recently as a year ago. An emphasis is placed on new terminology revolving around the Internet. Whenever possible, the book lists both existing Russian equivalents to foreign terms and widely accepted transliterations. A rather unorthodox linear-alphabetical dictionary organization combined with numerous cross-references makes it easy to locate desired terms as well as additional, contextually related translations.

Readers may find two types of articles in the dictionary - a main article consisting of a term and its translations and a second listing a term which may be an abbreviation, an acronym, or a form of a term that does not require its own translation. The English-Russian section lists speech, groups, and cross-references in English with explanations in Russian. The Russian-English section is the opposite.

An Internet version will contain the dictionary in its entirety as well as forms where readers can submit corrections and additions for incorporation into future versions.

From the Back Cover

This comprehensive dictionary, containing 30,000 entries with an emphasis on Internet terminology, is divided equally between the English and Russian languages. Included are many new terms that did not exist ? particularly in the Russian language ? as recently as a year ago.

Druker and Avrutin have compiled a modern dictionary with concise and comprehensive lexicon. Its readers will find two types of articles ? a main article consisting of a term and its translations and a secondary article that lists a term which may be an abbreviation, an acronym, or a form of a term that does not require its own translation. The secondary article always references its main article.

The English-Russian section list parts of speech, groups, and cross references in English with explanations in Russian. The Russian-English section is the opposite.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the better computer dictionaries available, July 17, 2005
By
This review is from: The Comprehensive Russian Computer Dictionary: Russian - English / English - Russian (Paperback)
This is an excellent, comprehensive dictionary, but it is a little dated now (2005). It was far better than any others available at the time I purchased it (2001).

One of the reasons I purchased this dictionary was because of the IEEE endorsement.

It would be great if in addition to their online database, the authors would publish a second, updated print edition.

This dictionary has a good Russian-English glossary as well. It would be worthwhile to expand it, thus making this book into a true R-E-R computer dictionary.

An excellent working aid for professional translators--even though it's dated, I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A note from the authors, November 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Comprehensive Russian Computer Dictionary: Russian - English / English - Russian (Paperback)
The Comprehensive Russian Computer Dictionary is intended to be a reference for computer professionals, translators, students -- anyone who works with computers using English and Russian languages.

This dictionary distinguishes itself by: a) comprehensive, yet concise, modern lexicon; b) inclusion, in a single volume, of complete English-Russian and Russian-English sections; c) linear-alphabetical structure with multiple cross-references to contextually related translations.

Numerous new terms are included in the dictionary -- terms that did not exist, particularly in Russian, as recently as a year ago. Russian entries include both, native expressions and widely accepted Cyrillic transliterations of foreign terms. Preference is always given to usable translations readily applicable to written and spoken word. Brief explanations are provided to clarify otherwise ambiguous translations.

For the convenience of our readers, the latest version of the dictionary database can be accessed on line at the same website as e-mail address.

The authors, Yury Avrutin and Paul Druker

1.0 out of 5 stars Questionable Customer Review, December 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Comprehensive Russian Computer Dictionary: Russian - English / English - Russian (Paperback)
The first review of this book is by one of the authors and not a customer. It seems a little self-serving if you ask me and should not be listed as a "customer" review.
