Book Description

DEREK KEYTE IS THE ONLY CURRENT BRITISH THRILLER WRITER WHO HAS WORKED AND SERVED WITHIN BOTH THE MILITARY AND CIVILIAN INTELLIGENCE COMMUNITIES: HE IS THE REAL DEAL AND HIS FICTION IS BRUTALLY HONEST, UNIQUE AND CRAFTED AGAINST A BACKDROP OF PURE AUTHENTICITY: HE IS THE ONLY WRITER OF HIS KIND IN THE GENRE...

'Compromised is the story of a British Special Forces soldier kidnapped by the Irish Republican Army…the terrorist who swears to break him…the friend who refuses to abandon him…the establishment who rejects him…'

Derek's readers have described his writing as being in the style of Gerald Seymour with a touch of early Tom Clancy thrown in and Compromised has generated a level of praise and interest rarely seen for a debut novelist.

This is the story of a British Special Forces soldier kidnapped by the IRA in Belfast during The Irish Troubles in 1989 – the first part of the story is relentless in its pace and covers a time period of less than 12 hours focussing on the kidnapping and interrogation of the soldier. In contrast the second part of the novel covers the years that follow the kidnapping through a series of snapshots of key events affecting the principle characters against the backdrop of The Troubles, interwoven with insights into the activities of British intelligence and security agencies including Security Service, GCHQ and the Secret Intelligence Service. The third and final part of Compromised is set in 1997 where, with the promise of a real prospect for peace looming across the whole of Ireland, there will be a final reckoning...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read November 29, 2011

Easy read. Story moved along at a good pace and was easy to follow. Some events were described several times using a different character's perspective...really helped draw a complete picture.

3.0 out of 5 stars Compromised April 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I found Compromised a difficult book to read, mainly because of the extreme violence in it. But it moved at a good pace, the plot was easy to follow and a lot of the action rang true in a way. But the characters were flat and some stereotyped and they had little back-story. And, although I understood why the point of view changed, often rapidly, from one character to another, it was sometimes confusing. That being said, I think, perhaps, that this novel would really appeal to someone from a military background.

I enjoyed this book - it gave a realistic insight into the workings of the British military and civilian intelligence community - some books are quite unbelievable but I thought this was okay - the characters could have been developed a bit more.

I really liked Compromised. It hooked me from the outset and I'm glad I stuck with it. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a pacy book and it's a rare and added bonus that it's set on the British side of the pond for once.

So, why aren't I giving it 5 stars?

The plot was OK (fairly straightforward and linear), the characters not particularly well developed and, worst of all, the viewpoint kept swapping around. If I had to pass a single message on to Derek Keyte, it'd be to decide whose eyes you're seeing through and stick with it. If you must chop and change, do it in section or chapter breaks so that it's clear. It made me dizzy at times, I confess.

That said, it's fairly un-put-down-able. Derek, do the book a favour and rewrite it to take out that choppiness. Add in a bit of background flavour to the characters and I think you've got a decent book there (for its genre). I've given you 4 stars rather than 3 (it was borderline for me) in the hope that you'll take this advice.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mundane June 21, 2012

I read the book and made myself keep going to the end in the hope of a burst of excitement. There was none.
I conclude it was the familiar bits of plot strung together in a flow of anticipated phrases.
If the plot had been imaginative, the story would have been an enjoyable read.
It is difficult to be more specific. Sorry.Compromised
