5.0 out of 5 stars In My Father's Name
Daniel Strange meets his [end] while riding his chestnut mare on the way to Texas hoping to buy some cattle. He is the best gunsmith in Missouri but his lifeless body is left at the end of a rope, robbing his family of a good husband and father.
... The first of a trilogy, all of them good.

3.0 out of 5 stars fair to middllin' read
A good story line BUT I had trouble with a 17 year old girl from Missouri being such a cold hearted killer. This could have been a better story. Maybe the next installment will be better.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put the book down! Outstanding Western!, April 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ralph Compton Death Rides a Chestnut Mare (Signet Historical Fiction) (Paperback)
At first I wasn't too sure about the book, but after the first chapter, I didn't want to stop reading and kept reading on chapter after chapter. What an exciting character Danielle Steele is. I was so excited when I got to the end of the chapter and read that a Part II is coming out in "The Shadow of a Noose" I just hope that it comes out soon. I love Louis L'Amour books, but now I really love reading Ralph Compton books.

I loved this book!! There are 4 books in all, and this one is the best, though they are all great. A female as the lead hero is a refreshing addition to western literature. Some may find it unbelievable, but I thought it was awesome!! I highly recommend it.

I am a die-hard Louis L'Amour fan, but i had run out of books to read so i thought i would try out Ralph Compton. boy, was i surprised how much i loved this book. so much so that i was finished with it the same day i got it, and finished the sequel the next day. i am awaiting the third book in the trilogy eagerly. if you, like me have are looking for good western books try Ralph Compton, and also Jake Ballas. They are both extremely good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Death Rides A Chestnut Mare, February 11, 2000
This review is from: Ralph Compton Death Rides a Chestnut Mare (Signet Historical Fiction) (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. I like the fact that the main character is a girl. Danielle, due to the fact her brothers are too young, decides to go after those who killed her father. The story line is so interesting that I could not put it down. I can't wait until the sequel "In the Shadow of the Noose" comes out in March 2000.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compton Books, March 11, 2000
This review is from: Ralph Compton Death Rides a Chestnut Mare (Signet Historical Fiction) (Paperback)
I've read all of Ralph Comptons books. It is unfortunate that Mr. Compton passed away this past year. If you enjoy reading action westerns purhase the entire series of Compton books. Last publication, "The Shadow of a Noose" is very good also. Thanks to Mr. Ralph Cotton, the Compton legacy lives on.

I though this was a very interesting twist to the usual western type book. Moved along well and held my attention. I'm waiting for the sequel "The Shadow of a Noose".
