This is a pretty righteous unit although a lower price would be welcome. Pretty low power, like 6 watts. Use an SSD for storage and it has no moving parts. Buy the big heat sink that snaps onto the outside of the unit to help keep it cool. Buy the VESA mounting bracket to mount it solidly inside your NEMA cabinet or wherever you're putting it. It probes as a very standard PC so your Linux and Windows and FreeBSD will go on there and pretty much have drivers to operate all the devices.

Although it uses an Atom processor, it is of the i386-only variety. That's good as far as low power consumption but it is 32-bit only. Comes with a gig of RAM, non-expandable.

It has a nice contingent of ports including 4 x USB, 2 x ethernet, audio in and out, DVI-over-HDMI and wifi. It comes with cables for HDMI-to-DVI, audio, power, mini-serial to DB9, and 2 x mini-USB to USB (you don't need to buy the cables Amazon offers in Frequently Bought Together.)

If you need a tiny, fairly low-cost PC with no moving parts for use as an embedded system or whatever, this could be your box.

I run Kubuntu Linux, on this little beast. Other than Intel's complete refusal to continue supporting the integrated CRAP gma500 video chip, this thing is wonderful!

It, currently, runs our VoIP server (FreeSwitch and FusionPBX), and will soon be installed in my Truck (my family's Zombie Apocalypse Escape Rig), connected to Ham Radio gear, OBD system, and touch-screen...

I am currently using the fit-PC2i for a PFSense firewall, setup was a breeze and had the box up and running in 30 minutes, it has been rock solid since. Definitely worth the cost considering how small the unit is, slightly bigger than my iMac mighty mouse.

I bought this to replace a firewall server to save on power but it also cut down on the noise as well. I'm not sure this is going to outlive the Sun server that it replaced, but so far so good. The serial console works fine with NetBSD, though the USB doesn't work quite right.

The only disappointment is that it seems FASTER than the full-size Pentium 4 system also in use. The disappointment is with the Pentium 4 system, not with the Atom system!

The latest Intel Cedarview sound driver for Windows 8 (may be labeled Windows 7, but downloads as Windows 8) can be made to provide analog sound through the audio/spdif jack in back of the z530 gma500 fit-pc2i. It helps to install the driver in superviser/vista2 compatibility mode, but the secret is to go to the realtek driver in the control panel and set it on QUADROPHONIC. Computer speakers then connect to the REAR quadraphonic speakers.

Likewise there is a latest gma500 graphics driver.

Have fun and play hard.
