The use of this device is tricky. It is designed for the computers that the parent manufacturer produces. If your computer requires DDC or EDID then the device may not work for you. This link from the manufacturer explains. [...] If you are unable to disable the DDC or EDID requirements as stated in the link the device will not work for you. I currently have ASUS jumping through hoops trying to figure out how to make this product work with their computers.

I bought this converter to connect my Asus EeeBox with HDMI output to a project which has VGA input only. In general it works fine but there is a problem with resolution. Converter seems to be very smart but the problem is: PC is smart too. These two smart guys start playing with each other on system re-boot or cable re-connect and this sometimes results in a weird behavior. Two bad behaviors I faced were:
1) Converter made PC think it only supports full HD (1920x1080). This not a problem for PC but fatal for the projector which just cannot handle this resolution. If your projector is the only output you have then you're in troubles since you won't be able to change resolution.
2) Converter decided that it should output signal in 800x600 *only*. Whatever resolution I set on desktop the output was always 800x600 and desktop was scrolling inside this view. I had do disconnect converter and re-boot the machine.

The main problem of the converter is not supporting or badly implemented DDC protocol (the one which lets video card know supported resolutions on the monitor). Once you placed the converter between your PC and projector/monitor you get thrown back to 90th when video card knew nothing about monitor. So, the converter itself is Plug-n-Play as written on the box but device behind it is not. In the age of Win7 and PnP this makes a lot of pain. This is the reason why I give 4 stars.

Advice for the owners: don't boot your machine with the converter connected, let the machine complete loading and then connect the device. Process of video card initialization makes the converter crazy. Though, some systems get crazy when loading without monitor :)

This converter works well with converting the fitpc dvi output to a vga connector however I do get noise/shadowing at higher resolutions (1050 or higher).
So far its reliable and for my purposes its ok for occasional use. If you expect to use it a lot, then you may want to consider a different monitor/tv that can accept dvi or hdmi.

I bought it to keep in my toolbox on the chance I might need it in the future. Maybe I will never need it, but when the time comes when it is needed I would be pulling my hair out if I didn't already have it.
