From surfing the Internet for data to number crunching in spreadsheets and database managers, Computer-Assisted Reporting is the most practical introduction to the data analysis skills that journalists need to succeed in today’s newsrooms. This edition expands the highly-regarded basic skills instruction and offers more advice on how to write better news stories. Brant Houston’s extensive newsroom and teaching experience make this text easy to use as a core text or as a supplement in an introductory news reporting and writing course.

3.0 out of 5 stars Click here, but why?, July 13, 1999
By A Customer
Like the old Chilton manuals for car repair. They're great if you already know how to repair your car. Long on click here, short on why or when.

1.0 out of 5 stars Practically worthless, January 19, 2006
This review is from: Computer-Assisted Reporting: A Practical Guide (Plastic Comb)
I agree wholeheartedly with the last review. This out of date book gives advice that is a little too "practical" so much so that it is almost useless. I simply don't understand why this book was written. And it is too simplistic in its outlook. Sorry, news stories aren't that clean. Worthless.

2.0 out of 5 stars not "like new", May 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Computer-Assisted Reporting: A Practical Guide (Plastic Comb)
I bought a book from these guys that was described as "used--like new." It was not. The binding, front and back cover had sticky black marks on them. The rest of it was in reasonable shape, so it wasn't worth a return, but watch out for their potentially misleading descriptions.
