I bought this bundled with EZ-Firewall. In spite of the dumb name this AV software is unbeatable. Despite or maybe BECAUSE of it's lean and mean characteristics. It is small, fast and effective.

Norton and McAfee should study this program hard. AV programs should be unobtrusive and require little overhead. Norton takes over your system and eats resources like no tomorrow. McAfee is just nagware constantly reminding you of all the great other McAffee products that you haven't bought yet and to add injury to insult it misses things. Before I installed eTrust in one machine I scanned with Norton with the latest sig file, system rea clean, ETrust found 4 virus files on the first sweep after installation! Real ones. (McAfee was better when it was inexpensive shareware)

I trust this software and have purchased several licenses, one for each machine. It is well worth it. Scrap the other bloatware, this will make your machine safe and still usable. With eTrust installed I know I am safe.

Highly recommended.

eTrust just works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Please ignore that 1-star review!, November 25, 2004
This review is from: eTrust EZ Antivirus 2005 (CD-ROM)
EZ Antivirus DOES scan incoming and outgoing email (contrary to what the other reviewer might believe). This program may not include a firewall, but the firewall built into Windows XP SP2 is acceptable and the free edition of Zone Alarm is a good alternative as well.

The best aspect of EZ AntiVirus 2005 is that there is NO drag on system performance. Trend Micro, Norton, and McAfee ALL take a 6% hit on system performance, and all those other antivirus programs cause crashes, hangs, and blue screens under Windows XP (see cnet.com if you don't believe me).

The interface on EZ Antivirus is much better on the newer version 7, so be sure to grab the latest version on their web site. Trust me - you'll never go back to Norton again!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best, February 7, 2005

This review is from: eTrust EZ Antivirus 2005 (CD-ROM)
I have tried all the free antivirus software including some pay ones. I have tried AVG (this one would not update) I download Avast (this one hogged my system resources and almost crashed my computer). I tried Mcafee (this one would not update at all, even when I tried to update, failed to find 4 viruses and made my computer slower than it was before).
So far eTrust EZ Antivirus has worked the best. It does not hog system resources and my computer is once again fast again. Thanks Computer Associates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superior Anti Virus Program, January 2, 2005
This review is from: eTrust EZ Antivirus 2005 (CD-ROM)
This program is bulletproof. It updates automatically and doesn't have a bunch of annoying popup messages that try to sell other products, unlike McAfee and Symantec. Best of all it's dirt cheap. Ignore the 1 star rating by another review.

I switched to CA Antivirus from Norton which was slowing down my 3.2 gig XP system. I had no problems with it and was content until it was time to renew my license. One month before renewal time the program's renewal module kicked in. after EVERY boot up the module would sit in memory until I connected to the internet. at which time it would automatically ask me to renew and opened up my default web browser to the renewal site. After 4 days of this I felt my back was against the wall and renewed my license,(I did like the program). Unfortunately that was not the end of it. I received no confirmation of purchase from the company until 15 DAYS AFTER RENEWAL PURCHASE. Yes my order was listed in the website, and yes the automatic reminder continued every single boot up and connection. after a week of calling Customer service (4x) and getting the runaround I found turning on my computer so unpleasant that I searched around and found another program which was less intrusive and Just as effective if not more so. I managed to still maintain an acceptable level of computer footprint so that my resorces are not taxed as with Norton or Mcafee as well. It was a shame because I liked the product but the Greed Module kicked in and ruined the program for me. - Switched to Kaspersky. There are many other very good antivirus programs out there, you just have to do a little digging.

1.0 out of 5 stars breaks other programs, can't uninstall, January 7, 2006

DONT BUY OR EVEN INSTALL A TRIAL OF THIS SOFTWARE UNTIL YOU READ THIS!!!
I tried this program on a recommendation from the Microsoft web site, that should have been a warning right there. On install the etrust antivirus software (nothing else just antivirus) broke my Zone Alarm firewall, interrupted internet browsing and caused the system to hang up. I uninstalled it and have tried installing other antivirus programs since then but none of them will install; they keep popping up with guess what error message? That's right, please uninstall Etrust antivirus software, it is incompatible with our software. I've emailed Etrust and tried thier 'live' online chat and get no response. The software is evil, it looks like I will have to format my hard drive to get rid of it. I can find no related keys in the registry to clean by hand. Don't repeat my mistake!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed, June 20, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: eTrust EZ Antivirus 2005 (CD-ROM)
I got this product in April and exactly two months later it said my subscription had expired and I needed to renew in order to keep receiving updates for antivirus protection.I wrote to the company and a week later they sent me a reply. The reply was to go to their update center and to renew. I sure wasn't going to pay again for something I only had for two months and its suppose to last for a year.
I'll be going back to my trusted Norton Antivirus, it may be slow but at least I only have to buy it once a year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ex-Norton User, January 16, 2006

I have installed ver. 7 of this software on four computers, two running XP Pro and two with Win98SE. Absolutely no problems with installation on any computers, no software broke, the updates work fine, the automatic scans work fine, and several viruses have been intercepted in email. (Yes, of course the program scans email.)

Zone Labs of ZoneAlarm fame uses CA Antivirus in their Security Suite, and THAT works fine in a couple of other computers that I manage.

The program uses resources sparingly. It won't slow down your system nearly as much as Norton Anti-Virus.

On one of my computers, with an Athlon XP 1800 running XP Pro and 512 mb RAM, the program scans about 260,000 files per hour.
The manufacturer offers a free trial download, if you want to test it out. Obviously some others here have had problems with the program, but so far I am very happy with it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unable to uninstall, August 21, 2005

Once my year-long subscription expired, I have been unable to uninstall CA ETrust. It now pops up a nag window about every 20 minutes, and when you click exit, it pops up a browser window and takes you to CA's web page. I have tried uninstalling many different ways to no avail. This has been going on for months and makes my computer painful to use.

My attempts to reach support are futile. Their support page doesn't work in my browser (IE 6.0) and the phone line is pay (which I will probably end up paying).

This is much worse than a virus. At least with a virus I can go buy Norton and clean things up.

2.0 out of 5 stars EZ Trust... well, it's half right., June 17, 2006
This review is from: eTrust EZ Antivirus 2005 (CD-ROM)
Yes, it's easy to install, configure and use. The footprint is small and it doesn't hog resources. That's the good news. The bad news is that this software's virus detection rate is abysmal and the company's tech support is worse. So, in short, don't *trust* it.

Two examples, starting with tech support. After building a new computer, I had several blue screens (stop errors, BSODs) and my analysis seemed to indicate that EZ Antivirus was at least partially responsible. I emailed support with all the relevant info. Their (paraphrased) reply: "We understand that you are having Faults in Windows. This is because you have Windows installed. If you did not have Windows you would not have Faults. Thank you for contacting E-Trust." I should have that engraved on a plaque.

Example 2, AV detection: When my subscription ran out, I uninstalled EZ and tried a demo of Kaspersky. It found 5 viruses on my computer that EZ never told me about. In this case, it's 2 strikes and you're out. Goodby, Computer Associates.
