Book Description

April 28, 1998
To give the information technology professional the edge, this book provides 250 information packed pages; covering for the reader exercises, checklists, forms, and success factors to evaluate whether U.S.A. computer consulting is for them. An object-oriented approach is presented to capture detail in an easily digestible form for those with a computer background. For human resource staff and recruiters, a skills inventory exercise is provided along with government regulations and locating work. War stories of the authors' eight years of American computer contracting along with how to survive as an alien after starting the job is also covered. Included in the appendix, which is almost half of the book, are numerous sources of information, URLs, checklists, rates calculations, contracts, billing and taxing issues, and client/contractor considerations.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Computing people and others think about working in the United States for many reasons. Some to add an international flavour to their resume. Some to escape inhospitable winters. Some to travel to exotic locations. Some to enhance their skill sets and become even more marketable. But most, to experience the green of American dollars. This book was written to provide the potential alien (as he or she is known in the United States), and those that are concerned about how the aliens think, with a source book for making informed decisions and evaluations about working in the United States. Reviewers have commented that the book is "solid" and "complete". That is because authors who have done the work, lived the culture, and reflected on what they have learned wrote this book. Other reviewers have commented that "I wish I had had this book a month before going". Recruiters of skilled, technical aliens have commented that the book is an objective appraisal of success on the job. One human resource manager has used the book to convince an IT professional to stay where he was. The book was written because the authors could not find the information collected anywhere when they had to make decisions about accepting an offer or continuing with a contract. This book is mainly written for information technology professionals by practicing computer consultants.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sloppy and poorly done, December 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: U.S.A. Computer Consulting (for Canadians and other Aliens) (Paperback)
There is some useful info in this book but really you would be far better off buying some of Janet Ruhl's books for example. It is sloppy and poorly organized. The large type used reminds me of when I used double spacing and large fonts to pad term papers (in high school). The 'objected-oriented' methodology is bizarre. Hello ? Who wants to read about data-flow diagrams in a book that purports to help Canadians with consulting in the U.S. ? Several times as I was reading, I found myself thinking that I was about to finally get some meat - only to read that this was outside the scope of the book ! And it took me perhaps an hour to read the whole thing. There are a few useful URLs given but much more than this can be found at many web sites out there. Overall, this book is not worth it !

5.0 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT BOOK!, June 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: U.S.A. Computer Consulting (for Canadians and other Aliens) (Paperback)
I found John Wilson's book to be an excellent reference for anyone who is interested in working in the USA in the computer field.

It dealt with negotiating and securing both the actual employment contracts as well as the all important immigration visa's.

With this book I was able to secure a very lucrative contract to work in the US as well as securing the proper visa to do so.

John Wison's book lead me step by step through the immigration process. His book even brought up a few possible 'problem' situations that might occur when crossing the border. As such I was fully prepared when I encounter just such a situation. With the advice from this book I was able to deal with it in a confident manner and as such had no further problems.

Once again, I whole heartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in working in the USA in the computer field.
