While I have no doubt the author knows his stuff, I can't imagine this book having strong appeal with any one audience. On one hand, I can see how those already in the know about Computer Science would find this text too simple, since it spends most of its time explaining the nuts and bolts of the stuff they probably already know: binary language, bits and bytes, programming languages, and a heck of a lot of terminology.

It's even worse for those of us who don't know jack about CS and are trying to get an idea. Simply put, this book is dry and dense, and always getting bogged down in a level of detail that seems inappropriate for something calling itself an "overview." It's stuff you have to slow down or re-read to fully absorb, and I suspect it would turn off a lot of casual readers from exploring CS further. When it's finally over, you'll have learned very little about programming, which is a key reason many would pick up a title like this in the first place.

I don't think "Catch 22" is the proper term here. If it really is too simple for experts and too abstract and frustrating for beginners, "worst of both worlds" would capture it better.

I recommend this book to those who have interest in CS. The book has plaint of information that challenge your knowledge, and examples that support its content. I used it for an introductory CS class and we cover most of the chapters but the last one.

The book was a required book to have for my module. However, i did not like the wording the writer was using. I also find it a bit confusing when you want to follow his ideas. Over all, it is OK book.

This book is an introduction to comp sci and is not very complicated. For MCS 260, you can get by without buying this book, but it is not recommended.

This book really got me interested in CS. Its easy to read and motivated me for my next class in CS.

The service I received from Amazon was fantastic! The Computer Science book for class on the other hand is highly boring. In order to enjoy this book an individual would need to enjoy engineering or the concepts of computers.

I haven't read the book, even though my instructor recommends it. I know it is a good book though. What I want to praise is the company I ordered it from. I ordered it Nov. 17, they mailed it Nov. 18, I had it on Nov. 23. Excellent service is all that I can say.
