Not really worth it, February 24, 2011
This review is from: Weather Station Keychain (Misc.)
This thing is too big for a key chain. It is 3/4 inch thick, 1 1/4 inches wide and 3 1/2 inches long - almost the size of a closed flip-phone. Too big to carry conveniently in a pocket, and too "dangly" to clip onto a belt loop. Although the settings & controls are easy to understand, the button sensitivity is wonky; sometimes when you press them, something happens; sometimes not. Also, the face is easily scratched, so if it spends a lot of time in a pocket or bag, or swinging among a set of keys, it will soon become unreadable. It isn't waterproof (there are holes in the back to allow air to reach the humidity sensor) so I wouldn't recommend exposing it to the weather which it is supposed to be predicting.
Here are the features on the display:
Temperature (accurate)
Humidity (seems accurate)
Calendar showing month, date, day of the week, and phase of the moon.
Clock (can be set for 12-hour or 24-hour "military" time)
"Weather Forecast" (inaccurate)
I'm not sure how the weather forecast works; I'm guessing there is a barometer tucked somewhere inside this gadget. The forecast display has three graphic icons: a cloud, a sun above the cloud, some raindrops below the cloud. I've had this thing for a week, and so far it has always displayed the cloud (even on days that were clear.) Most of the time it has also displayed the sun (even on a day that was overcast) except when it was displaying rain. If its forecasting options consist solely of rain/not rain, then I ask: Why bother with the cloud icon? A sun and a raindrop would have been sufficient. But this is beside the point. Twice when the display indicated rain, it did actually rain a few hours later. Once when it was overcast, the display seemed to indicate "partly sunny" - and despite my skepticism, it did not rain until after the display had changed to indicate rain. But today it rained, and the Weather Station Keychain never indicated any rain. FAIL.
An actual barometric readout would have been more useful than this cheesy graphic interpretation.
It also has the following useless accessories:
Compass (North is a different direction every time)
Flashlight (dim and flickery)
To sum up - here's a device that just doesn't live up to expectations. It's not very convenient to carry with me, and I can't trust it to predict the weather - which is what I wanted it for. The clock/calendar and the other sensors seem to work okay, so if you need to know the current time and date with moon phase, temperature and humidity, then I guess this would be worth getting. Otherwise don't waste your money on this cheaply-made gadget.
