5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Documentary!
I am majoring in Computer Maintenance and I loved this DVD. It is extremely informative and easy to understand. Not boring, either! Even my Mom loved it, who knows absolutely nothing about computers. This is a great DVD.

3.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly short and not much detail.
I just got done watching my copy of this program. Computer nerds beware, this dvd contains very little historical detail. Time length is what killed this documentary (50 min.). It covers evolutions in four minutes or less. That is not nearly enough time to even scratch the surface.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Look at Computer History, June 2, 2010

This review is from: Computers (DVD)
When I grew up in the 80's, anyone who was into computers were looked at as these weird "nerds", outcast. Funny how now just about everyone's got a computer of some sort. Although I enjoyed playing video games growing up, I never knew much about computers or its history, even up until recently.

So it was fun and informative for me to watch this DVD about computer history. At just 50 mins, the history is brief. The program has a quick feel about it, jumping from period to period. Of course, since this feature was produced in 2000/2001, all of the newest stuff looks pretty dated by today's standards. Not too detailed, but still a good intro into computer history for beginners.

The teachers at our school show this to their classes a lot. It presents the history of computing in a more lively way than a lecture or timeline.
The teachers practically fight over who gets to show it next!

I use this DVD in one of my introduction to computer classes. It is a great way to bring the students up to date on the history of computers.

4.0 out of 5 stars good overview of computers for students, September 27, 2008

This is a solid 45 minute video about computers that includes some basic concepts (hardware, software, binary), brief history of the development of computers, and discussion of future developments (smart homes, etc.). I also have the other History Channel DVD, "The Creation of the Computer." It has much more in-depth history, but was getting dated. I like that the newer compilation is more modern, but I miss some of the history. It's a good lesson for an introductory computer course in middle or high school.

This Documentary explains the steps that were taken to get where we are today with computers. It takes you back to the very beginnings and explains what might be ahead as computers get smaller and faster. An amazing film which anyone who is interested should buy.

I just got done watching my copy of this program. Computer nerds beware, this dvd contains very little historical detail. Time length is what killed this documentary (50 min.). It covers evolutions in four minutes or less. That is not nearly enough time to even scratch the surface.

They bring up Babbage and his punch cards but not Bouchon, the man who invented the punch card for his looms (circa 1720's, i think). They bring up the rise of the Internet, but fail to even mention the names ARPANET or CERN.

They totally botched their narrative on the rise of the PC. They brought up how war was able to drive technological development, but not how the hippy movement spearheaded the move from mainframes toward personally owned computers (They attribute it entirely to miniaturization, which was only a partially factor. Had it not been for the ex-hippies these miniaturized processors would have been continually implemented in mainframe/supercomputers).

If you know absolutely nothing about computers, and are looking for an entertaining program this might be for you. Other than that, don't waste your money. Go to your local library, or hit the internet. Both are free and contain more historical information.
