Book Description

November 1, 2000
The newest edition of this desktop reference is a “must have” for recruiters, salespeople, administrators, managers or any non-technical person who works with computer professionals, jobs, and products. Considered the industry standard, this valuable reference explains computer systems and technology in easy-to-understand, non-technical terms. Extensively revised and reorganized, the Twelfth Edition examines the exploding effect of the Internet on all aspects of the IT world. It describes the five cornerstones of IT—Platforms, Development, Data, Communications and Applications—and recent developments in databases, e-business and component-based development. Among the new topics in this edition are embedded systems, the movement to knowledge management, and Customer Resource Management. With over 1,000 new entries, the Glossary now includes over 10,000 definitions of terms, products and acronyms! Each entry is packed with information; many have been expanded to include related platforms and vendor URLs. And a CD of the complete Glossary is included with the book. Even if you own an earlier edition, this new edition includes significant revisions that make it an essential reference and an important resource!

About the Author

M. Susan Hodges, founder of SemCo Enterprises, Inc., has worked in Information Technology for over 25 years and has an extensive background in both technology and training. In 1989, recognizing that computer professionals have their own distinct vocabulary which is difficult for non-technical people to understand, she wrote the first Computers: Systems, Terms and Acronyms text and eventually the seminar by the same name. Since then her company, SemCo Enterprises, Inc., has continued to develop seminars and reference materials for people who work with computer professionals. Ms. Hodges has remained a generalist and technology enthusiast throughout her career, so she is uniquely qualified to create materials that cover the entire IT spectrum. The eleven previous editions of this book are used as a reference around the world!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of Its Kind, December 21, 2000
This review is from: Computers: Systems, Terms and Acronyms, 12th Edition (Paperback)
This is simply a must have item for anyone who isn't technical but must deal with techies and their inexhaustible and eternally mutating store of computer related terms and acronyms. In addition it does an exquisite job of explaining how the world of Information Technology is constructed and how its various parts fit together to comprise its whole. The included CD enables you to put this information on your PC and access it quickly. If you are a technical recruiter, a writer or researcher, a non technical manager managing techies or just someone who wants to know what all that seemingly impenetrable jargon means, buy this and keep it near you.
