5.0 out of 5 stars Great anthology May 31, 2011
By Joy
A self-published ebook collection of fantasy/sf short stories, most of them previously published. Stories vary from short and hilarious ("Faust's SASE") to tragic ("Comrade Grandmother") to a sort of tie-in to her Freedom Series ("Spirit Stone"). Every story in this collection is good, although I had my favorites. I like the way a lot of the stories revolve around World War II one way or another, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars delightful, emotionally engaging September 12, 2012
Verified Purchase
Each of the stories is concise and complete without being too long or too short. Kritzer's writing is emotionally engaging. The central characters are realistic - well, perhaps not "Faust's SASE" - and emotionally accessible. A couple brought me to tears, especially the first one, "Baba Yaga". The repeated theme seems to be the price you're willing to pay for your heart's desire. Saving a loved one from death, knowledge of the future, great drugs, self-knowledge. While there's a general theme, the characters are all distinct and unique.

I started to read "Freedom's Gate" and it really didn't do it for me. These I found delightful. I would happily pay for it again - the ultimate compliment.

My only complaint is that it's only available on the kindle - I really wanted to loan it to some friends who don't have one.
