5.0 out of 5 stars Creeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepy!, April 18, 2004

About once a yr , my family and I travel through a few western parks. Somhow, we ended up in Reno last yr and we thought it would be interesting for the kids if we visited Virginia City.
Well, let me tell you - THIS IS THE BOOK!!!!
It's like being there all over again!
The HISTORY!
The REALISM!
...and then there's the ...SURrealism!
It's downright creepy!
For the kids' sakes, I'm glad we DIDN'T read this book on our trip or they might have had a change of heart!
Wonderful references to a place which truly seems to stand still in time.
I hope BD Bruns has more books - I'm hooked!

If you're into ghosts, The West or American History, this is the best book.
My Dad and I don't agree on anything but we both actually think this book is cool.
Check it out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining, educational and historically accurate., January 24, 2004
By
Kenneth A. Metcalf (Reno, NV United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Comstock Phantoms (Paperback)
Having visited Virginia City dozens of times, I had heard a few stories about residents, from the 1860's, some people claim have never left. Comstock Phantoms was more educational than any of the available historical tours there. The ghost stories are most entertaining, and Mr. Bruns has a way of luring you into the moment, captivating your imagination with various accounts of the supernatural. It stirs a certain mystery within you and enables you to objectively question your own beliefs. The reality is that Virginia City is a thriving, old western town with a raucous and colorful past. After reading Comstock Phantoms I am inspired to go hunting for some of those colorful characters myself. I shall never again gaze upon the Old Washoe Club without studying its forlorn and lonely windows wondering who still lurks there from a time long passed, but certainly not forgotten.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Enlightening Comstock Phantoms, August 2, 2004
This review is from: Comstock Phantoms (Paperback)
Brian Bruns has written a very entertaining book on the Comstock Ghosts and Hauntings. He has wrapped his own ghost hunting experiences into a book that is spooky as well as historical. It has been a pleasure to pass on my copy (and buy another for myself and also another for my daughter) to my daughter-in-law who also could not put it down.

On visiting Virginia City and the the Comstock area, you can put the buildings and locations together with their ghostly inhabitants thanks to Mr. Bruns. Mr Bruns writing style is refreshing and lively. His experiences are both humorous and well told making you feel like he is in the room talking to you instead of the reader just reading a book. I am still taking photos to see if the Blue Lady will make an appearance on film!

If you are planning a trip to this area or even if you are a Nevadan, this is a book worth reading and keeping as a guide to some of the events and places of our historical past that are evidently still making an impression on our present day.

I am eagerly awaiting Brian's next endeavors!!!!!

My husband and I visited Virginia City a few yrs ago during our trip to Lake Tahoe. What wonderful memories Mr Bruns' book brings back. We saw a few of the places he mentions but now we want to go back! We wish we had his book BEFORE our trip!
Not only is it intriguing, but you can learn a lot about the history of the area , too.
This is just great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome and educational, too!, February 8, 2004

This was one of the best ghost books I have ever read! It has all the ghost stories that are so good, and also really cool history in short, easy to understand bites. The trivia is interesting and the ghost-hunts are really good, where the author makes fun of himself. This book got my sons interested in history, and that is priceless!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Read, April 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Comstock Phantoms (Paperback)
This is an easy reading book with well written descriptions of the hauntings in Virginia City and it's surrounds. The author's humor keeps the stories lively and his sprinkling of facts about the mine, city and state were both enlighting and fascinating. I'm re-reading it already.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anne Rice has nothing on this guy!, April 18, 2004

I live in New Orleans - I probably know more about ghosts and the supernatural than 90% of the people on the earth. It's my hobby. It's my passion. It's my life.
This guy, Brian knows what he's talking about. He's pegged some of the stories but I'm really surprised that he's actually uncovered some things I DIDN'T know!
I'd love to talk to this guy and pick his brain.
I could help him with a New Orleans based book if he's looking to write one.
I've been studying American History and folklore forever and this book is one hot property. If you're into the cool stuff like I am - it's one of the best sources of stories and even if you're not a "Believer," you gotta give this guy credit for the HISTORICAL accuracy. I mean, Virginia City's there - just like it was way back - but whenever the real estate moguls plow it under, this book, Comstock Phantoms, is gonna be the best thing we'll have.
I really can't recommend this book enough - to ANYONE!
